Well I'm going to chime in . Like most other skills in "Bushcraft" it good to know how . No one ever said you had to baton an 8" round through the middle either . I've taken my BK2 and literally used it to break/pry apart wood . Strictly for the heck of it in a controlled environment . We have knives these days than can handle batoning due to the process used or the metals or whatever . Chose the best tool even if it's not the proper tool . And most of all using the one between your ears can usually provide a viable solution .
Often when I'm crafting something and I need a piece of wood of a precise size I'll use batoning as a method of splitting out a piece as close to the target finished dimension as possible. This is usually on fairly small diameter wood, and it puts virtually no strain on the knife.
