another of my subscribed knife mags came today, showed another idiot batoning wood with a folder.any one of us should always have a folding shovel & a hatchet or heavy knive in our vehicles at all times.if you're going on a trip, hunting ,fishing, or camping only an idiot would take off without the necessary items needed for your excursion. what in the world would neccitate batoning in the city.hitting the blade back on any folder for many times destroys the strength of the pivot pin.granted there are a few folders designed with systems lacking a pivot[opinel, cold steel opinel copy] however the practice invites pivot or blade failure.goes to show many writers have the i.q. of an earthworm.

If you are referring to the latest Tactical Knives magazine, I believe that test is done to show how strong the blade is, and just how much abuse a knife can take.

While I agree 100% with your recommendation of carrying the proper tool for the job, I think you might not fully understand why they do this in the reviews. A good review should tell you exactly how much a knife can withstand, including the pivot pin. And, in some extremely rare cases, you might have to rely on a folder for survival. Wouldn't you like to know what your knife can and cannot do before you might have to rely on it? I personally would.....

While I have never had to baton wood with a folder, I do see the value of this test. I know that if my knife has withstood this particular test then my normal EDC usage will not have any adverse effects on the blade. Like I said, a good review will fully test the limits of the knife, regardless of how it will be used by the general public. So, for what it's designed for, it's a good test of the pivot strength..... even if most people will never duplicate it.

Just my $0.02......

That's a rather harsh judgement.
Maybe the guy was just showing that it could be done if one needed to, for whatever reason.
I'm sure that even one of your obvious intellect cannot possibly foresee all possible survival scenarios.

Humans by their very nature make mistakes.
And old Mr. Murphy is always waiting to spoil your plans.
Besides, just about any idiot can survive with all the necessary survival equipment at his disposal.
But a true survivor is one who can make do with expedient items in an emergency.

what in the world would neccitate batoning in the city.
The same reasons that would necessitate batoning in the wilderness....for example, building a fire with wood that is wet on the surface.
There are probably more folks "living off the land" in the cities of the world that are doing so in the wildernesses of the world.

hitting the blade back on any folder for many times destroys the strength of the pivot pin.
Not if you know what you're doing and if you're careful and you select your wood with care.

granted there are a few folders designed with systems lacking a pivot[opinel, cold steel opinel copy] however the practice invites pivot or blade failure
Opinels do not lack pivots.

You might want to check you grammar and your spelling before handing out further criticism.

Thanks for mentioning that, I forgot to add it into my original post.

Most of these writers have "been there, done that" a lot more than most of us have, or ever will. They know what they're doing, and how to do it well. And it apparently takes some intellect, since I do not recall seeing hundreds of different authors in these magazines, rather a select few are chosen to give reviews of certain knives.

And, while we're on the subject, when was the last time your review made it into Blade or Tactical Knives? I'm sorry if that sounds harsh to you, but your previous words lacked intelligent, well thought out counter-responses to what you read in the article. So I'm just curious as to what you think makes you qualified to question those writers and their reviews.....

sometimes you baton with a folder because you have no choice...i've bashed on a buck 110 with a rock numerous times because i had no choice in each situation...and the blade has some major dings because of it...other than that the 110 is still in service...if i have to abuse a tool because it's the only thing i got for a given situation, i will abuse it, to destruction if that's what it takes...

What knife was it? I've never batoned with a folder and doubt I ever would but it'd be nice to know I could.;)
I baton with a fixed blade in the city all the time. I can do it inside right next to the fireplace.

If he was referring to the new issue of TK, then I'm assuming he saw the review of the Blackhawk CQD Mark l Type E. The article starts on page 58, with the battoning pic on page 60.

An interesting note, the author (that the OP accused of being of the same IQ as an earthworm) even mentions that this was done solely for the sake of testing the blade for those who require a folder to be able to baton wood. And you can clearly tell from the context of his words that he's not a fan of that idea at all. So it's not something he likes doing, or was recommending, it was simply an extreme test (like I mentioned before).

thanks for your insights & critisms.my grammar & spelling is poor however no person is totally infallible in judgment. i'm 70 yrs of age & never had to baton a folder in my life .may i mention i've extensively fished the gulf & pacific coast many yrs,. in addition hunted & packed idaho,wash.,ore., colorado, &texas.many times by myself.persons with poor memory retention would not only forget the basic tools ;they probably forget their knife.if you are traveling or going rural you have a social obligation to be prepared so as to prevent all the energy , danger,& waste of time & resources to find & extract inept people from difficult situatioms.the article in K.I. was only one of the hundreds of this behavior i've seen in many yrs. subscriber to knife world, knives ill.,tactical knives, mother earth news , blade mag., outdoors, fur fish & game for longer than many of you have been on this earth.[70's to date] as for the person bato ning in his backyard,he is only one example of an accident begging to happen.i'm self employed, have never drawn u nemploymentor had to move back in with mommey & daddy & probably couuild still put in a harder days work then the majority of you respondents.most of you are only weekend warriors and never gone hungry in your life.your input is appreciated but damn few of you can say,[ i live where i stand & have the many scars to prove it]

...This doesn't change that fact that you CAN baton with a folder if you're careful. If I were to be doing so, I'd probably disengage the lock and hold the handle loosely, thus avoiding strain on the pivot pin. Batoning is one of the handiest techniques for making the hearth board for a bow drill, so it can be useful when you need to start an emergency fire sans matches or fire steel. If you've never needed it, that's fine, but understand that for some people it comes in handy. :)

I forget where I read this, it was an article in one of the knife mags about people asking how to do knife reviews for the magazines. According the magazine I was reading, they were open to anyone submitting a review. The person need some basic writing skills, but they emphasized above all else, great pictures. It didn't seem like there was any prerequisites other than submitting a well written review with nice pictures.

The same reasons that would necessitate batoning in the wilderness....for example, building a fire with wood that is wet on the surface.

This brings up a point I have wondered about many times. There are examples of batoning on TV, the internet, and even this forum when it is absolutely unnecessary. Most, and nearly all times, wood can be located that is dry enough to burn. The primary purpose of splitting wood is to dry it out and should be done when it is green. Batoning dry wood serves no purpose other than proving to oneself that he or she can do it.

I'll receive a nice folder on Monday. When I get it I'll stab it through a car door, chop concrete with it, pry open a window and do some batoning.
I just don't get this mentality.
But... it's your knife.

People want the best....so toughness, durability, etc hold much interest. It demonstrates in a short period how something MIGHT hold up in the long run. Peeling thousands potatoes, apples, cutting cheese ( :) ) would not make exciting reading/photos for me.
BTW how do people reading these posts always know how MOST probably do etc. ''most of you..." "most haven't ..."

I'm with you!
Next up the guys who use their folders in steakhouses, who don't realize how dorky they look...

i have seen that done a couple of times...it's just a "look at me, look at me" play; and we look, and it definitely looks asinine...

And I have a watch for that can survive a hammer blow,, but is off by at least 20 minutes per hour, is it a quality watch or not?

I've batonned with a folder, and I don't feel bad about it.

I was on a climbing trip and we decided to spend the night so we could climb for one more day. Figuring that a fire would be nice we picked up some firewood at the store. I needed to cut some into kindling and the biggest knife I had was a ZT 0500. Splitting the wood with gentle taps of a stick worked very well.

I don't understand what the fuss is about. I wasn't prying and there was nearly zero force on the pivot. The pivot was more stressed when I whittled some roasting-sticks.

I hate knife-abuse as much as anyone. I cringe when someone cuts on a ceramic plate. I just don't consider a little (proper) batonning to be abuse. Anyway, what's the purpose of a heavy-duty folder if you have to baby it.
