I know a lot of folks get riled up when this sort of statement or question is proposed and like to argue their expertise in favor of something other'n a big chopper.

But I also understand that there's a small demographic of people who simply can't resist to carry something of the sort along with 'em, even if just in a go-bag or whatever. Shoot, who knows when something's gonna need choppin'.

Can anyone post any pics of a BM earning some combat pay? Or deployed anywhere outside the continental US really.. I'm curious to see if any turn up.

I'll help you out with this as soon as I get mine. I currently have a PD and SMOG Warden deployed with me. In a month or so I plan on having a CGFBM, a FNMOASH, and a HOGSJTACLE here as well. To be perfectly honest though, I have no idea what my unit will let me get away with carrying.

Well said. Be safe my brother.

Ken

(PS - Kudos to your choice, she sounds terrific!)

I'm not really planning to carry the FBM. I just can't imagine ordering a knife and then letting it sit on the other side of the world for a year before I can at least chop some air with it. It will most likely stay in my b-hut. However, in a convoy, you don't really dismount much. It wouldn't be so much of a burden in a HMMWV. I also don't think the weight would be too noticeable when strapped to a ruck. I will be carrying the HOGSJTACLE at a minimum and I will try to get away with carrying the FNMOASH. I doubt the average soldier would carry either, but I love knives so I'm the exception. When am I going to have another opportunity to carry around a huge knife wherever I go for a year without frightening people?

yah, your right. Merrils Marauders just carried Khukuries. Ghurkas carried them as well and they outweigh the FBM. OR how about the LArge SAS Bolo's and parangs used by both US and Allies in jungle ops. It all depends on what you're doing. Look throughout history at all the large blades deployed in campaigns. Look at the number of HAwks and HAtchets ou in the field and they outweigh a bowie. So large blades are carried often in the field.

Different time with a lot more recorded incidents of hand to hand combat and I would argue a different military (mindset wise). I cannot see someone on patrol (vehicle or dismounted) having a FBM with them. The weight alone would be a hinderance...and why would you carry it? I think that the "just in case" factor is blown way out of proportion and could be filled by something like a SJTAC or a Yarbarough as stated above.

I would also like to point out super large blades will attract the wrong kind of attention from your command. My opinion is one that is based on regular troops (Army or Marine) and not on any SF type stuff as that is waaaaaaay out of my lane.

quite true. Desert situation demands different equipment. But do not discount the need of larger tools in different environments. Hence what I stated in my post which is now in bold so you can read it.

Point taken, but not necessarily valid. Look at the loads servicemembers are carrying, it is unreal. Having a large knife that is not used in training on a regular basis is not an asset but a hinderance.

agreed and I am not saying a big knife is necessary, in fact in most cases nothing but a real small fixed blade or folder is all that is needed. But if your going to carry a 11 inch OAL knife, 3-4 more inches isn't that much more. I frankly don't see the need for the inbetween knives. Either very small or very large is ideal. If I can carry an 11 inch knife, I can carry a 15 inch knife. Otherwise I will carry a scraper 4 or such.
