I have been a long time advocate and carrier of the G19 (glock 9mm for those unaware of what i am speaking of). however, tonite after a lovely dinner at o'charleys, i swung by books-a-million and wandered back to the magazine rack and picked up a few magazines; the latest issue of tactical knives and HANDGUNS. they have a run of a GREAT article in this issue about the 9mm being a better round than what all the .45 naysayers would have you believe. the article is well written and articulated well. that being said, they ran another article on the new FNH .45 auto. for those of you whom arent familiar with FNH, they are the company that makes the vast majority of all of the rifles/machine guns we shoot in the Army. (cant speak on behalf of the marines, navy, etc) this past summer at Fort Knox, my FNH M-16 was my best friend. I slept with that rifle everynight for a month. needless to say, FNH's reputation proceeds them and they need no posting on having stellar credentials...

however..

i am looking at getting the new FNHFNP-9. (FNH's run against the G19 from glock). i have read numerous reviews and was wondering if any of my buddies on BF have owned one, shot one, or held one. I have handled one at the bass pro shops down the road in sevierville/gatlinburg and loved it! i was tight on funds do i passed on it... however, i am in the market to buy and was wondering how this FNP9 holds up or compares to the G19. i welcome all posts and critiques of BOTH firearms. thanks fellas.

i have the fnp-9. i put about 100 rds so far: gold dots golden saber fmj. no ftf or fte at all. much better ergonomics for me vs the glock 19.the internal design is VERY similar to a SIG.

even the "blue" one is actually blackened stainless steel.

outstanding value w/ 3 16rd mags. i really like the hammer drop feature. i can go form DA to SA and back to DA in ~3seconds by using my offhand thumb.

if there's bump in the night i can start out in DA mode and if necessary can go to SA mode w/ my opposite thumb in ~1 second. very versatile!

DA/SA ??? Get a HK P7,safe ,convenient, reliable, durable !! Modern loadings of the 9mm ,especially +P are decent but after using the 40 for many years I'll stick to that !

You'll be hard-pressed to beat the Glock in terms of reliability, which is the #1 attribute of a defensive pistol. Few parts, simple design, pull trigger go boom.

Black Talon in 9mm is the best, but so far recently HST are taking over the slack BT left-off.

And I don't intend to flame here, but whatever ammo you use you should practice with it in terms of feeding reliability.

this is why glock is the most widely carried brand of pistol by american law enforcement, they just work. under dire circumstances as well.

bill - the fnp-9 felts great in my hand as well at the bass pro shops. and the 3 magazines it comes with, you CANNOT beat that! i want to see a torture test between the g19 and the fnp-9. i will bet you that the end results might surprise you.

i am not saying that the glock will get beat but i am attesting that i think that the fnp-9 might be able to hold his own right up next to the glock. any testers out there????? :p

The 19 is just hard to beat. I've been carrying mine daily for the last 10 years. I have the older style one with no finger grooves, and no light rail. With the plus 2 bottoms you have a small 9mm that holds 17rds., and shoots as good as a full size.
I actually didn't shoot mine in about 3 years. The same magazine was left fully loaded and the gun was rarely ever removed from its holster that rode on my belt daily. I had it out in soaking rain, cold, humid weather, and no maintenance at all, nothing. The barrel was even full of lint. I blew the cobwebs out of the pipe, reinserted the mag and shot 150 rds. of Russian steel case garbage out of it with zero problems. I trust this gun to protect my life.
The only problem I ever had was the front sight fell off when it was still new. I installed Trijicon steel sights and never had a problem again. I also installed the Aero-Tek gude rod, slide, and mag release.
Imho the G19 is the perfect self defense handgun. Or the 23 if you're a 40 guy.
I also have a love affair with my Beretta M9. It's a big monster for a 9mm though, which makes it hard to carry, but what a shooter. Just about everyone can shoot the M9 well, easily.

you are right, the G19 is as close to the best 9mm on the market as one will find.. i know this. i have one. in fact, it was my first glock. but i am looking into this new FNP-9. i have heard stellar things and am having faith that it will be as close to glock as a competitor might be able to get.

do ya mean w-w ranger?? they really arent like the old black talons.

speer gold dot and remington golden sabre are also excellent 9MM loads.

No matter how stellar the reviews are, YOU are going to have to put a lot of rounds downrange thru YOUR gun before trusting it.

How many thousands of rounds before it'll be "equal" to your ALREADY PROVEN G19 ?

It sounds to me like you've already found "the" gun for you. Why try to replace something that's already proven itself to you?

.

I have shot lots of pistols and revolvers and the Glock immediately gave me some trouble. I had to relearn it basically. I am used to DA pistols that allow you to shoot your follow up shots (or first shots as SA). Also the grip angle puts my trigger finger in a slightly different position. So after my first shot/s when I resteady myself and my finger moves forward and I start pulling with the second joint of my finger instead of the pad. I went through 4 boxed one day trying to get myself to shoot the same (Correct) way everytime.

I just wanted to mention this. If you are like me and grew up on Berettas and HKs the Glock is a very different animal. I now carry a G17 near everywhere I go.

I'm curious why you need to "resteady" yourself after the first shot/s.

Do you mean readjust your grip?

By "second joint" do you mean the first joint from the finger tip ?

And I know exactly what you mean by the Glock pointing high !

Thanks !

When did this happen???

FNH didn't make my M16A2 back in 1992.

Not sure when, but they make M16s and M249s. Actually FN has always made the M-249. I wasn't aware of it until recently, but they own Winchester and Browning, and have a plant in South Carolina where they make stuff for our military.

By resteady, I just mean bring myself back to position after firing. Either shooting one or multiple shots and then recentering yourself. I only do this when target shooting at multiple targets, but as I train this way, it gets annoying. And yes, the second joint from my finger tip is correct.

When I first picked up the Glock, I immediately saw the top of the slide. You are supposed to grab it at the highest you can, but a fast draw puts my hand a little beneath that. So you get that high shot. Still, practicing gets rid of that fairly fast.

I've held one and had the opportunity to take it apart and look it over pretty closely. It has a very comfortable grip, nice trigger in both double and single action, and overall seems to be very well put together. I've never shot one though, so I can't say anything for sure.

I'm trying to think of a good reason why someone would so woefully neglect their key piece of survival gear.

Glock or not, that kind of neglect will catch up to you and bite you in the ass.

For sheer reliability and durability, the Glock is hard to beat. I've run a G17 over 20 years and have tried to wear it out unsuccessfully. In fact, about 2 months ago, I took that same pistol to Frontsight for a 4 day defensive handgun course.

I really like the Sigs, Hi-Powers, and some others but, how can they compete with the 20+ years of great service I have gotten from my old G17?
