Battle of the Warranties: Benchmade vs. Spyderco

I haven't had to make any inquiries to Spyderco yet.

Benchmade has treated me amazingly. They sent me a replacement clip and screw set no questions asked with absolutely no delay.

I am mostly a Spyderco guy and have had two experiences. I sent in a P1 for blade play and was told it was toast. I promptly received a brand spanking new P2. The second time I asked for screws and was told to send the knife in. Not unreasonable, but I would have liked the screws sent to me. They are good factory knives for sure. I've never had an issue with a BM or Kai knife, but my ratio is Spyderco 10:1 so maybe not a fair comparison.

Have experienced Spyderco CS. I was unhappy with the result.

Have experienced Benchmade CS. I was very satisfied with the result.

Have experienced Kershaw CS. I was very satisfied with the result.

Why doesn't Spyderco stock parts for their foreign made knives?

Considering the CS that I've received from BKC, and even SOG, I'd be fairly pissed if I had a warranty issue that couldn't reasonably be resolved. Especially with a $250 knife like the Southard.

I guess it's a good thing that every knife that I've owned from Spyderco (including the Southard) has been excellent.

It's my understanding, and I write this based purely on what I have read on the forums. CQI or constant quality improvement, means that minute changes are made to any given number of knives and features. With this, the specific parts used to make a knife might vary from one batch to another. This may include stop pins, pivote, and other fasteners, etc.

Interesting. I work in manufacturing, and we have an alphabet soup of programs that rivals the military. CI, or constant improvement at my plant is the same. I found it interesting when Les from BKC mentioned Sigma (or Black Belt, or was it 5s+1... can't remember) as we use it too.

Anyway, thanks for the enlightenment. That actually makes a lot of sense.
