Who wins:

Moore Makers Moose or GEC # 73 scout

I really like the MM smooth yellow bone and the fact that there is no logo on the blades, However, the blade shapes on the GEC look really usefull and easy to maintain. I would love to hear some opinions on which you perfer and why.

Thanks,
Paul

P.S. Pics would be nice too.

Here's my favorite.

Just about the perfect size to carry (3-3/4") with two large blades at the same end, great looks and great steel (1095). I always liked a knife handle to widen at the butt or pommel to help control, so I never cared for a moose or muskrat pattern.

I would have to go with the scout also, I have four GEC's and the quality top notch, however I don't like the blade etch, but I do over look it. Does Moore Maker even make their own knives?

This isn't an ad campaign so I don't see the need for lots of logos on the blade and/or bolsters. Keep it conservative and tasteful. ymmv

i agree that is a lot of clutter on small blades. but i like stag better than smooth bone. also the 1095 carbon onf gec is great.honestly i have'nt tried queens 1095. the d2 of queen's is good stuff.mike latham could enlighten us if he desires. i believe the construction on gecs is better.9 gecs to present, 6 queens.

The 'advertising logo' on the GEC is more of an ink stamp rather than an etch. Per MorrowJ's advice here a week or so ago, I used some metal polish (Flitz, Semichrome, etc) to polish off the logo on a new GEC toothpick/stag. Worked well. So, no need to make the logo a deciding factor on whether or not to purchase. By the way, that GEC scout will be my very next purchase....might have to gift it to myself for Christmas! GEC's are some wonderful feeling knives in-hand.

wireedge, I must have missed that thread. Thank you very much for the great information!

Does anyone know if the 73 has half stops?

Given the two choices, I'm not sure if I could pick one over the other.

I have really been drawn to the MM smooth yellow bone, and G.E.C makes some great lookin patterns. They both seem to get good reviews for quality...

Which ever you pick, it won't be a bad decision :D

Absolutely:thumbup:

I do tend to prefer gnarled stag or jigged bone over smooth for grip though.

Yes it does. I just got one recently and I really like it so far. Here's a couple pics of mine with smooth almond bone.

I can't say which is better since I don't have any Moore Makers, but if you get a #73 you won't be disappointed.

They DO have half stops ??? I really didn't need to hear that.

Maybe Santa(wife) will be nice this year :D

I say Mooremaker. The sowbelly will fit better in your pocket and the yellow smooth bone is very nice.

just in case you wanted to re-think the Muskrat.

Nice Mooremakers Roland. I like how the older Cammies have the cutouts in the handles to grab the nail nicks. It gives them more personality.

I can see this is going to be a hard choice.

I want one of those meeses to pieces so that my vote.

I really like smooth bone. Danny that almond one is very pretty.

Thanks, I think it looks better in person than the pics do. The ones with primitive bone look great but they are harder to find.

They need half stops as the springs on mine are pretty fearsome!

Many people seem to have this experience with GEC's but the springs on this one aren't that bad. They don't seem to be harder to open than any of my other slippies.

jason [morrowj] thanks for the tip on gec etching. although my experience leans towards gec i have to say that this group is a tie for ownership. all the knives are so good that a person ca'nt go wrong with any of the group. probably do'nt need to say this but when carrying horn or smooth bone do'nt have coins or keys in same pocket .

I know the horn scratches easily, but what does it do to the smooth bone?I've been trying not to keep change in my pocket out of fear itself, which I never did with stag or jigged bone.
