BCCI Fundraising knives

I haven't recieved mine yet and I will have to decide, when I do get it, whether or not to keep it. But I ordered a knife that was advertised with nickel silver bolsters. Not brass. We have waited a good while to recieve them and there is no excuse for the foul-up. An explanation and a bit longer wait would have suited me better than getting a different item than what I bought.

I ordered the knife for myself. I am not interested in selling on e-bay.

Hell Scott, I've been haunting my mailbox watching for mine, now I'll have to wait for Monday. I thought from the beginning that brass would be better suited for that handle material, but either way, theres a spot in one of my display cases for it. With Buck's move, fixing this problem would take a lot longer than I want to wait. ;)
To be honest, I don't see what the big deal is. Yes I think we should have been notified and been able to decide whether or not we wanted a refund, but what the hey, if you love 110's, what difference does it make whether they are brass or nickel. :D I love them all :D Jake it won't be long before you can fill that spot in your case. :D

Peter,

Return shipping will be included in the refund. That stands for anyone who doesn't want to keep their brass bolstered 110.

I do plan on speaking with CJ in regard to this issue.

John, I've got two in stag. I wish they had done some in the 'stone' and 'poly' of a couple of years ago. Aisian water Buffalo or similar would be interesting and of course an upgraded steel. thanks, guy

John,
Thanks for the reply and offer of a Full refund. It will be a tough decision whether to keep the knife or not. As I mentioned, it certainly is a fine knife but I REALLY wanted what I ordered and was expecting.

If CJ decides to provide the knife as designed, I would prefer that option.

Thanks,
Peter

I have no doubt the brass looks nice also, but the point is, this was handled VERY poorly. Everyone who ordered these knives should of been told about the screwup via email or here on this forum, BEFORE they we're shipped out. To find out about it when the box is opened is ludicrous. Very, very poor judgement on someone's part. That's as unprofessional as it gets. Buck went down a notch in my eyes for this fiasco. :(

I'm not a member of BCCI, however, this incident is making me think that it wouldn't be the best idea to join. It's one thing to join a group when everything's working fine, but when someone considering joining discovers that BCCI has allowed a mistake to be shipped out, rather than what members and purchasers *thought* they were buying, well, who made the decision for the mistake to be sent out, and what proof would members and perspective members have, that such a "mistake" (or series of mistakes...) wouldn't happen again?
I don't know why BCCI has fund raising knives, but BCCI has definitely raised some extra funds. In my unprofessional opinion, a knife with nickel silver bolsters is probably more expensive to both produce and sell than one with brass bolsters, so, is the brass bolstered version worth the same $85 that the nickel silver bolstered version supposedly would have cost...? BCCI members paid for something they won't be getting, and BCCI made their money on an item they aren't shipping.

No one likes unexpected surprises.

The price difference between brass and nickel silver is not enough as to bring the cost down. With the confusion of the move, there was a definate lack of communication. When this is all said and done I think Buck and the collectors club will do all they can to make things right. :)

A few weeks ago I sent an email to Larry Oden inquiring about the status of the BCCI Alpha 279 folding hunter w/buffalo horn slabs. It was supposed to be shipped prior to Christmas. Was told that due to a mistake on the handles, the knives wouldn't be shipped till after the end of the year. (04) He never did explain just what the mistake was. After this recent screwup with the 110, ya gotta wonder what the heck is going on there. I realize the move is likely playing into all of this, but it really should be no excuse for what happened with these 110's ( & apparently the 279) & the way it was handled. Wonder what surprises we can expect with the 279??? (if it ever get's here)

All,

I made the decision to send the knives out. Was it a good decision or a poor one? That is probably a matter of one's opinion. The club was dealt a dilemna. Since the BCCI doesn't have every member's email address and has no way of knowing which members visit the forums, shipping the knives with a note was the quickest way to communicate the error. It expedited the arrival of the knives to members and also gave them to chance to actually see the brass bolsters instead of wondering what they would look like. With Buck's move, coupled with the holidays, there is no telling how long of a delay returning the knives would create. Would the delay disgruntle more members or would brass bolsters cause more discern? Do I make the right decisions all of the time? No, but I'm not afraid to make a decision either inspite of the knowledge that it is impossible to please everyone. If anyone is displeased with the knife, return it for a full refund including return shipping.

The BCCI has fundraising knives to help pay for our quarterly newsletter and website upkeep. These knives also give our members the opportunity to purchase Buck knives.

Thanks for explaining John.

Certainly, if you didn't have the email information for everyone or know if they read the forum, it would make it troublesome to email them notice of the difficulty, or announce it to the forum. However, if you have everyone's mailing address, to send them their knives, then snail mail would've reached everyone, explaining the bolster switch and maybe including a picture. BCCI members could then have replied, letting you know if they wanted the knife with the brass bolsters, anyway, or not. The snail mail exchanges would have happened within a couple of weeks, and the postage for sending letters would probably have cost far less than the shipping and handling charges to send the knife to everyone.

You're right, we all make mistakes...sometimes that's the only way that hard-heads like me learn anything. ;)

Some may like the brass bolsters with the honey worm grooved bone scales better than the nickel silver, because the brass' color is warmer, closer matching the handle material. Wish I could see a picture of them.

Thanks John, I feel that's a fair offer to be able to return the knives if that's what people want to do. Me, I'm completely satisfied with the knife. Like I said in an above post, I collect both frames so either makes me happy. Thanks for the offer.

Personally, I hope there are a few more screw-ups with their move to Idaho, simply because it will result in a greater number of weird, freaky, one-of-a-kind knives that we can all try to find and hopefully use to add some very unique knives to our collections. Won't it be boring once the new Idaho factory is running smoothly and nothing ever goes wrong? I'm looking forward to getting my copy of the "Hey, remember when Buck was moving to Idaho and messed up that Collector's Club custom?" knife. Plus, it makes very clear what the NEXT BCCI fundrasing knife should be, which is not a 112 version of this one, but the 110 that this knife was supposed to be in the first place, with silver bolsters.

Received mine in the mail Friday. At first I was a little disappointed that it had brass bolsters. But after looking it over more and handling it, I have to agree with previous posts, it probably looks better with brass than nickel silver (IMHO). It's a keeper for me.

Mr. Foresman,
I appreciate the fact you we're faced with a dilemna & did what you thought was best. Certainly don't have a problem with that, although I don't agree with how it was handled. What I don't understand is how the wrong bolster's we're put on the knives & nobody noticed this during the early production. I mean, you'd certainly think when the 1st batch was made, they would of been inspected by someone who knew how they we're suppose to be made up. Seems like someone in the know would of wanted to inspect the 1st batch to see how they came out. I mean the knife was advertised here & the BCCI newsletter for quite awhile as having nickel silver bolster's. Yet nobody at Buck inspecting these knives caught this mistake early on?

Mick,

I can't argue with your point concerning inspection. These knives should never have been shipped to the club. Maybe this problem will help to change some policies at Buck.

John

My knife, hopefully, will arrive tomorrow or Tuesday.

Even though I ranted pretty good in my earlier post, I will probably keep the knife. I am still aggravated that it is not as advertised but I do understand that mistakes will happen. I hope the mistake was a result of the chaos in the move to Idaho and not representative of Buck Knives today. But the mistakes I have been hearing about knives coming from the Custom Shop makes me wonder if they have someone there who cannot read a work order (or whatever they are called in a factory).

I still am happy with my membership in the Buck Collectors Club and I hope this problem doesn't keep potential members from joining. I think a lifetime membership is a good value.

I am still crazy about Buck knives also and I wish the best for the company. I just wish they would stay away from China. :D

Hopefully when the dust clears from this incident everthing will be back to normal. Once Buck is settled in their new facility I'm sure the operation will be better then when in Cal. John, I really like this idea of these knives. I for one would like to see the club continue this fund raising program making the 110 and also include the 112. These special 110's are a great addition to my growing collection. I'm nearing 40 110's in my collection and like the idea of different blade steels and handle materials. My hope is to see a yearly offer of the 110 as a fund raising knife in different variations. ;)
Scott

On a side note, I'd like to see Buck include D2 steel in the mix. :D

Ya know Scott, we should talk soon, I'm up to 54 110s now. we might do some swapping ;)

Send me an email or give me a call. Lord knows I love to talk knives. :D
Not sure but I think I bought a 110 from you not to long ago, slim line purple heart?
