Are these knives any good. They do not seem to hold their value and are hard to resell, with the exceptions of maybe their butterfly knives. I was looking at getting a Bowie and hunting knives from them, but am unsure now. I thought being made in the USA would be a plus for them? Is the steel, workmanship, aesthetics? Any insight would be appreciated.

IMO,they've always had problems with quality issues.Wiggly blades, gaps in liners, poor fitting scales, ect. If you can select your knife as opposed to ordering online you could likely find a good one.I like their Damascus steel.Ive heard they bought a lot of the old Schrade tooling and quality is improving.I hope that's true.As things are now,for about the same money you can get a better knife from Buck,Case,or Queen. As for the Bowie knife, ive had one with Damascus and was quite happy with it.Also, when i sold it i believe i at least got my money back.

over the many years of sharpening knives, i have seen quite a few of their knives and they were "ok" but that was about it. i would go with case or queen like seals said.

I've handled enough Bear & Sons knives to come to the conclusion that I will never buy one online or mail order, but only if I can personally inspect it first.

The last time I was interested in one, was a bone handled trapper they did for Gander Mountain, and after spending the time to examine around 35 of them, could not find a single one that didn't have either fit or finish problems.

I've had a few good and a few not. I agree with the folks above, handle one before you buy.

You can also contact them and tell them that the use of 3 pins on slipjoints and lockbacks is a necessity, not an embellishment. :)
