Bear Grylls is back

The fact he carries a fire steel means nothing when you are drinking from elephant dung.

I think the fact that people like you actually think other people who watch the show will actually go out and drink elephant dung is more disturbing than him actually doing it.

And I think the fact that people like you, think the fact that people like him actually think other people who watch the show will actually go out and drink elephant dung is more disturbing than him actually doing it, is even more disturbing. :D

Hahaha. That is so funny.

All you guys talk about is how some person is going to go out and do what bear does and get themselves hurt. So if you dont actually think that, then you guys have nothing on him, correct?

Hey Gerberblades, Les may be an old Hippie but I'll bet he can spell LYNYRD SKYNYRD RIGHT!!!

Hi, Greybeard- Thanks for the spell check. Shouldn't that be Graybeard?!

The fact is, I watch Survivorman as well. I made this post in jest because of the strong sentiment against Man vs. Wild on this forum. I thought maybe the emotions had cooled but I was wrong!

Besides being entertaining, both of these shows usually provide a few valuable tips and some natural history information. You can't ask for much more from tv these days.

Skammer,

Its entertainment. Get a grip. I like watching it so do people here posting, does that mean I am "outdoor challenged". I just spent a year living in Northern Iraq outside in the elements just about everyday. So I am "outdoor challenged"........

JollyRoger3 (Formerly known as Vermonster)

Jolly, I said many outdoor challenged people not all. I was not talking about you but rather people who dont know any better.

Maybe I should have explained myself better.

I know its entertainment but last season it was not marketed as such and "SOME" people including kids are influenced by this crap. Not so hard to believe is it.

And BTW at 4 am last night life was anything but self righteous.

Thank you for your sevice in Iraq.

Skam

Y'know I was just taking the piss out of this thread but if you really want to know what most fellows here have a problem with is this; Every time Grylls pulls off some silly, unsafe or unwise stunt, It's a missed opportunity to impart some real, useful or even vital knowledge. If Discovery channel showed a large disclaimer at the beginning of the show that read "solely for entertainment purposes and not to be taken as educational" or something of the sort, I'm sure it wouldn't have as great ratings. So what we have here is a bunch of people (us) who happen to take outdoors recreation and/or survival preparedness seriously feeling kind of cheated because it could be so much better. I still watch it, and it is fun to watch but not as much knowing some of it is staged.

As for Les Stroud. I think his show is miles ahead for these reasons; As was said before awesome and I mean awesome cinematography. The fact that he does complain is realistic and brings home the point of how important it is to have a positive attitude. Better, broader, more varied info. better music both as soundtrack and his trusty harmonica. Humor. Les is more articulate and just seems more interesting, both the narration and monologue seem more natural and not as scripted as Grylls'.

Last year 42 people tried to drink from elephant dung....14 of them died.

What a horrific way/reason to die. Interesting stat though. Im wondering how many of these people got the idea from Bear, which is what you're implying. I do see your point though, definitely. One thing we all(or most) agree on: This show is geared more towards entertainment than total hardcore survival.

I wasnt laughing at your comment. I was laughing at this one, which I think is a joke.

But yes its hard to tell if something is joking with just words. Smiley faces help.

Maaaann, I didn't mean to stir up trouble I was only trying to lighten things up. Threads like these do have value because they do bring out some interesting points. People do have to be weary of not offending or getting offended too easily.:o

Yeah, I have been trying to keep it light with certain comments, but have also been trying to respectfully defend a guy who I believe deserves some defending. I also think there have been excellent points brought up in this thread. I just didnt want to laugh at people dying because they drank elephant crap. That would suck.

Who is keeping the score on people killed by falling coconuts?

Mental note, apply large blob of petroleum gelly to belly button every time i leave my door. It will make it easier to catch loose lint, and will burn better and longer. Also works as lip balm

It actually helps with chafing which is why I am a big supporter of PJ;) Haha just imagining that makes me laugh.

Belly button chafing = No will to survive

Nemoaz,

The Territorial Army SAS Regiments (21 and 23) undergo the same selection as 22SAS, but due to the part-time nature of the Territorials, the selection process is stretched over a period of one year. They get a tiny bit of slack on the long drag about 30 mins, this is a 40 mile hike over the Brecon Beacons, with a 55lb bergen plus food etc, to be completed in 20 hrs if your 22SAS, a lot of very tough good soldiers I know, didn't make it. But they (21 & 23 SAS) have to complete all other aspects of selection.
If they decide to go to 22 SAS, they have to do re-selection in 22 SAS's aloted time scale

It's a fun show! Sorta like a cross between fear factor and Jackass.
