Bear Grylls Knife Question

The handle on that Martin does look comfy. I would love to get it in Damascus just because it would be such an oddity.

Thanks for the info! Being in Texas I'll give martinknives a call! Can't belive I haven't heard of them.

Ok, don't freak out lovers and haters. I have no desire to wait 4 years for a blade, but I do think the design is great. Does anyone know of a quality copy or blade that is very similar in style?

Call the nice folks at KnifeWorks.com, and order a RAT RC-4.

Better knife, better price. ;)

a big plus 1 on Martin

Just talked with Ed at Martin. Great guy. Should have my quote here shortly. 1 - 3 month wait depending on options. Not bad. Lifetime warranty and a fellow Texan!

those martins look like good bushblades, never seen them before and price point is fair.
The 700$ version is a joke.
Anyone know why they took Grylls name and endorsement off the original overpriced brand?

That is a sweet knife.

SB

thanks, I love it, it feels perfect in hand, they are really great to deal with as well. The only thing I might have done differently if I did it again was go stainless. I really went back and forth on it and decided for a bushcrafter tool steel would be better, now I somewhat regret not getting the stainless. I have plenty of carbon steel bushies, a stainless one would be nice.

I'll cast my vote for Martin.

::hits the "survival/bushcraft/yadda yadda link" and sees the first pic::

AND HE'S GOT A REPLICA OF THE FIRST BLOOD KNIFE!!! ::squeals like a teenage girl::

It's a sign from God. I'm meant to buy that knife.

You people just keep making it harder and harder to stick to that "no more knives!" vow...

ETA:: I just wish I had the $525 to buy it from them. I got horny before I saw the price, now my undies are wet and I feel all used.

Maybe a small joke...the BG knife was originally (2007) priced British Pounds 350 or about $570 at todays exchange rate. Now he's charging 395 pounds or $640, and it almost makes sense to pay more not to have BG's signature.

Rob Bayley was a respected British maker but not very well known until he hooked up with BG who contracted something like 10 (or fewer) knives for his own use. Just like Lyle and Hibbon and the "Rambo" knives or Wood and the Mears "Woodlore", Bayley became more widely known. As in this thread, any complaints revolved around Grylls and not the quality of the knife.

So, when you consider that this is a handmade knife with all work including sheath coming from a single shop with a reputation for perfect fit and finish the $640 cost is comparable to other mid range customs.

Rob Bayley only published that his knives would no longer carry the signature and there was no indication of a "falling out". Considering that the waiting list is over five years it's likely Bayley, especially with new found fame, was simply getting sick and tired of making one BG knife after another.

an old thread debating the knife when it was introduced
