Bear Grylls Knife Question

Nice!

Order is placed! Ed is an amazing person to talk with. Took all the time possible and was happy to talk to me and answer all my questions and then some! The 1-3 month wait begins! I can't wait!

The steel. 440c is really outdated.

It decomposes over time? Damn. Now I have to throw away hundreds of Schrades, Camillus and others in my collection! Funny though, the damage must be hidden. They still look, cut and do other chores as well as they ever did.

At least I still have all those 1095 high carbon knives dating all the way back to the early 1900's. I know they haven't gone to pieces on me.

I understand your point. I have plenty of Bucks too. Just when I company is going to offer a custom or semi custom knife I guess I'd like to see them use a bit more modern steel.

I wasn't going to buy anymore knives for a while, but I'm awaiting a Blind Horse Scandi and now Ed Martin's BT:D I concur that he is a great guy to talk to and promptly answered all my questions...I didn't ask, but he noticed my email and gave me the military discount as well. I settled for the standard 1095 steel and think it's more than fine for my uses. Aside from "Bear A$$ Grills", the knife design looks quite utilitarian and very functional. I much prefer Ed's rendition of that style over Baylay's regardless of the cost and steel difference.

Hi TattooBlade, I notice you posting here a lot lately. On the steel choice, Codger was giving you some good advice that many of us around these parts have settled towards. In fact, most of us started off wanting the new steels and progressed towards wanting tried and true older steels.

Everybody is different of course and entitled to their own wants, but there is definitely a lot of group think in W&SS that leans towards carbon steels and where the comparisons between new stainless and tried and true ones like 440C have been made on fixed blades, many folks opt for the 440C because the performance/price ratio is just way too low (for fixed blades) to justify costing options of the newer steels. I certainly can't speak for everybody, but this is a very common type of statement in W&SS. If you want some empirical evidence, just canvas how many Bravo-1's are out there in 154CPM SS vs. A2. Not many of the former! Maybe this is all just group think and fashion, but I doubt it. More than anywhere else, this place is collective community of cutlery users. I think this is mainly a wilderness fixed blade phenomena since the world of urban folders seems completely opposite to this, the rage driven by new steels and recycled designs.

A final note, when dealing with custom blades. It is stated time and time again in the Maker's areas of the forums: If you are purchasing from a custom maker (which is a great way to do things) and they offer different types of steels, you should ask the maker what steel they have the most experience with and go with that. Everything depends on their ability to heat treat the blade and their experience and capability at appropriate processing of the steel will make a far greater difference to performance than anything else. So, one simple reason that many makers don't offer modern steels is because they lack the infrastructure to heat treat it or do not want to go through the extensive testing and self evaluation required to work with a new material.

Sorry for sounding preachy, just trying to pass on what I've experienced over 3 or 4 years of hanging around this place.

i'm strongly considering ordering the martin BT in 440c...i just love that sheath style...

Ole Bear ditched the S4 on his Africa show last night. He had a much longer knife from a different manufacturer I believe.
From Bayleys webpage:
"NB. My apologies but the S4 model is no longer available or branded as the Signature Bear Grylls Knife in any way."

Hey All,

Got my BT a week or so ago. It is an awesome knife. I had to send it back for a fine tuning and to exchange the horitonal sheath, which is just a bit too big for my body style. I should have it back this week! Once I have it I'll post some pics. I can say it is one of the best "in my hand feeling" blades I've ever held. The grip, style, shape, feel, etc is awesome. I'm a bit fussy, that's the only reason it had to go back for tweaking. The folks there are Martin are top notch and it was great talking with them on the phone every step of the way!

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Maybe he did have a falling out with Bayley, but, who cares, anyway.
It looked like some sort of basic military-issue knife.

Ha ha ha that's funny!
Dang it me too! I wish they had a date that the steel goes bad!

I'm just wondering here and not wishing to upset anyone.

I seem to remember that "Red Scorpion" or whatever they were called, made a "tracker" type knife that some people got a bit upset about. Something about where it was made etc...I also seem to remember that some people said it was a blatant rip off of a design from another maker.

What do people think about version/copies of this knife? Is it fair to the original designer, Mr Bayley, that people are making copies of his work?

I'm certainly not here to defend Mr Grylls, I've seen about 2 of his entertainment shows and haven't watched anymore. But to his detractors, how old were you when you climbed Mount Everest?

I have nothing against bear hes a good man I would be in heaven if i got piad to do what he does, I have a problem with the people running the show some of the things they put on the show could get a lost hiker killed. There is alot of good info on the show but some of the stuff is BS and puts you in more danger than you were to begin with.

The knife he used on the newest episode is a Gerber Prodigy. I wonder if he is going back to using a different knife in each show.

I kinda liked seeing him use a variety of blades.

Exactly. And hey, there are enough threads about the pros and cons of Bears show. This is a thread about my knife purchase, so argue your views somewhere else!

I'm not trying to argue.
I simply addressed someone's comment about the knife he used in that episode.
Sorry I disturbed your thread.

Relax just a tad.
