I probably shouldn't have, but I ordered the Bear Grylls knife from Bayley Knives some time ago. Before the "hotel scandal". It seems Bear occasionally slept in hotels rather than get eaten alive by mosquitos. Smart man. So here it is. RWL steel. Micarta handles. Hand made. The Ultimate Hotel Survival Knife.

Here it is with some of my other small survival knives.

The question is: was it worth the large sum of money?
(looks real pretty)
My guess is no?

Thanks. I would not recommend it for the value-minded. Because of the exchange rate, it is way overpriced, IMO. Now that I know how expensive they are, I hope to see Bear beating his up, and leave those poor Gerber Gators alone for a while. It's a nice enough little knife with wonder steel and hand made craftsmanship and all that. I doubt that it could do anything an SOG Seal Pup couldn't do for a lot less, though.

How much? Was it worth it? Does that cutout serve a purpose?

Did he use this knife on any of the shows? I only recall him using a Buck, a Gerber, and some kind of folder.

Thanks for the response. I am value minded since my Mora's often will superseede my custom RD-4 when going out into the woods.

How much? I guess that depends on the current exchange rate. I paid $675. Yeah. I know. That's a lot of money for a little bitty knife. I have been wondering about the cutout myself. Don't know yet. This knife did not exist during the previous shows. I am thinking it will be in the new Man vs Wild, if the silly hotel scandel doesn't get it cancelled. It is a nicely made little knife and it is truly razor sharp. Should be fine for slashing through those paper toilet seat protectors in hotels.

I like the knife alot.
I don't care much that Bear cheated.... he's just trying to make good tv, and I don't think he ever actually claimed to be legit. He just implied it with careful words.

I don't care for the guy or his show, or his knife. Just a matter of opinion though. I would rather have another Gator.

It's a pretty thing. Nice steel, too. I found the Bayley website. The website says he uses RWL powder metallurgy steel hardened to RC 60.
Way beyond anything I would be able to afford.

None the less, how is the balance? Have you used it in the field? How is the edge retension?

I heard that knife passed Bears field testing with flying colors. Evidently there's no continental breakfast that it can't handle. :D

Just kidding, I couldn't resist. It seems like a really nice knife. I hope you enjoy it.

I am going to test it against some of the finest 4" knives made. SOON.

The cutout section looks like it aligns with the external cross-strap on the sheath, the leather piece with his name. So I would guess that sheath retention is it's primary purpose.

he stays in hotels?? anyone got a link to info on that?? if true they outta cancel the show,

as far as the knife $600 seems steep to me............

Go do a search on the Wilderness Survival forum on Bear. The issue about him sleeping in hotels has been beaten to death each week for four or five months.
