First off thanks for having this contest and a huge thanks for the week extension. We finally got some rain and I felt more confident having a fire without burning the woods down or getting a heavy fine.
My 24 hours started 4-25-12 at 1300.
My knife of choice was the FPR BK-16 with some tinder and a firesteel from edctac in the pocket. For day hikes it normally carry a Kershaw Skyline to save weight but this is the BK&T forum and I haven't really used my BK-16 yet so I thought I'd rough it up a bit.
I come from a ultralight background so I am really concerned with weight. My loadout was light, multi use and a bit redundant.
From the top going left to right: Wildthings Primaloft insulation jacket, Poweraid water bottle, rain jacket and rain pants, water filter with headlamp on top, hand sanitizer, 2 Cliff bars, 2 Cliff energy shots, and 3 little bags of trail mix. Next is 2 drum liners, a BK-16, small first aid kit, little tripod for my camera to help with self photography, bandanna, Life+gear glow stick, TP, 550 cord, space blanket, AMK emergency bivy, altoids type tin with duct tape, fish hooks, tinder, char cloth, storm proof matches with striker, small oven bag, water purification tablets, 1 bread tie, collapse able straw, and a little snare wire. A Zip fireplace starter that burns for 20 minutes if I REALLY need a fire. Also a whistle, lighter and another firesteel.
All fits into a Golite Vo 24 pack.
Here is my water source, a bog from the outlet of a nearby pond
I started off by making a shelter to shield myself from the prevailing wind using the space blanket and 1 drum liner.
Added leaves and bows to help seal up the gaps. Also used the other drum liner filled with leaves for a sleeping pad. Found some rocks and made a fire ring.
My next plan was signaling for help. There was a clearing nearby with good visibility from the sky. I took my orange bandanna and made a signal flag.
Then an arrow pointing towards my shelter.
Next I worked on procuring food. All traps baited with trail mix. Three deadfall traps (just one picture).
I found a bungee cord and made a L7 trap with a kick to it.
While looking for fire ring rocks I found this little guy.
Put him on a hook, made a quick bobber and tossed it in with the line tied to a tree.
It was getting cold so I got a fire going.
Feeling warmer I tried to get some sleep. Note the Glowstick above my shelter so help can find me.
It got down to 31 degrees that night and I kept waking up cold when the fire would go out. Get the fire going again and doing crunches to warm up and then fall back asleep. Over and over again. I am glad I had that emergency bivy.
Then next morning frost.
My morning view.
After warming up in the morning and having a Cliff bar for breakfast I checked all my traps and got nothing. I really thought I'd get a sunfish at least. That really hit me hard. But I did find some wild edibles.
Walking around the bog I saw this turtle enjoying the sun.
The end came sooner than I thought.
All in all I had a good time despite being really cold at times. I am happy with my minimal kit but I hope I never have to use It again.
The fact that I didn't catch anything in my traps was a big hit to my psyche and being cold wore me down. At the end of the day I am alive and well and that is all that matters.
Good luck to everyone else who enters!
