Bear grylls replacement becker challenge Winner chosen

I'm gonna spend every night this week working on it, except for Tuesday and Thursday, Scout and Venturing meetings respectively, but with any luck it will be done by Friday night. I'll get pictures up as I go.

The blonde tells me if I want to survive the weekend I need to : 1) go to bed, 2) power wash the fence, 3) be at church on time Sunday morning.

None of you chumps is scarier than her. I'll be at church (maybe I can hide a BK14 in my suit jacket)

I guess I didn't get it done last week, but I've got only 2 things left to figure out, only one needs to be asked, the other is a matter of transportation.

Anyhow, what are the restrictions on traps? Does me squatting over a hole waiting for something to crawl out with my 2 or 16 in hand count, or do I finally have a valid excuse to learn to build a trap?

Build it. It doesn't even need to catch anything since in most areas bagging game out if season in a non life threatening situation is a no no. Just build it, show it works, and that's all.

Man I really wish I could have done this one. The fire danger in Maine has been really high and I have been waiting for it to go down but it hasn't rained all month. I honestly didn't feel comfortable in starting a fire that wasn't truely needed.

We are getting some rain today and alot tomorrow.

I might just go do it and post up pics in another thread just to get some dirt time in.

Good luck guys,

Jeremy

I had a problem with my little boat the other day when I was out and joked that I had my go bag with me so I would have been good. I could have taken the little boat out and hit an island on Tellico lake and see where it goes from there and completed this one. Good idea. Will consider for my first give away (Also, if it got too bad I could have just paddled up stream and to get help from Ethan.....)

First off thanks for having this contest and a huge thanks for the week extension. We finally got some rain and I felt more confident having a fire without burning the woods down or getting a heavy fine.

My 24 hours started 4-25-12 at 1300.

My knife of choice was the FPR BK-16 with some tinder and a firesteel from edctac in the pocket. For day hikes it normally carry a Kershaw Skyline to save weight but this is the BK&T forum and I haven't really used my BK-16 yet so I thought I'd rough it up a bit.

bg1.jpg

I come from a ultralight background so I am really concerned with weight. My loadout was light, multi use and a bit redundant.

From the top going left to right: Wildthings Primaloft insulation jacket, Poweraid water bottle, rain jacket and rain pants, water filter with headlamp on top, hand sanitizer, 2 Cliff bars, 2 Cliff energy shots, and 3 little bags of trail mix. Next is 2 drum liners, a BK-16, small first aid kit, little tripod for my camera to help with self photography, bandanna, Life+gear glow stick, TP, 550 cord, space blanket, AMK emergency bivy, altoids type tin with duct tape, fish hooks, tinder, char cloth, storm proof matches with striker, small oven bag, water purification tablets, 1 bread tie, collapse able straw, and a little snare wire. A Zip fireplace starter that burns for 20 minutes if I REALLY need a fire. Also a whistle, lighter and another firesteel.

bg2.jpg

All fits into a Golite Vo 24 pack.

bg4.jpg

Here is my water source, a bog from the outlet of a nearby pond

bg5.jpg

I started off by making a shelter to shield myself from the prevailing wind using the space blanket and 1 drum liner.

bg7.jpg

Added leaves and bows to help seal up the gaps. Also used the other drum liner filled with leaves for a sleeping pad. Found some rocks and made a fire ring.

bg8.jpg

My next plan was signaling for help. There was a clearing nearby with good visibility from the sky. I took my orange bandanna and made a signal flag.

bg9.jpg

Then an arrow pointing towards my shelter.

bg10.jpg

Next I worked on procuring food. All traps baited with trail mix. Three deadfall traps (just one picture).

bg11.jpg

I found a bungee cord and made a L7 trap with a kick to it.

bg12.jpg

bg13.jpg

While looking for fire ring rocks I found this little guy.

bg14.jpg

Put him on a hook, made a quick bobber and tossed it in with the line tied to a tree.

bg15.jpg

It was getting cold so I got a fire going.

bg16.jpg

bg17.jpg

bg19.jpg

Feeling warmer I tried to get some sleep. Note the Glowstick above my shelter so help can find me.

bg18.jpg

It got down to 31 degrees that night and I kept waking up cold when the fire would go out. Get the fire going again and doing crunches to warm up and then fall back asleep. Over and over again. I am glad I had that emergency bivy.

Then next morning frost.

bg20.jpg

My morning view.

bg21.jpg

After warming up in the morning and having a Cliff bar for breakfast I checked all my traps and got nothing. I really thought I'd get a sunfish at least. That really hit me hard. But I did find some wild edibles.

bg22.jpg

bg23.jpg

Walking around the bog I saw this turtle enjoying the sun.

bg24.jpg

The end came sooner than I thought.

bg25.jpg

All in all I had a good time despite being really cold at times. I am happy with my minimal kit but I hope I never have to use It again.

The fact that I didn't catch anything in my traps was a big hit to my psyche and being cold wore me down. At the end of the day I am alive and well and that is all that matters.

Good luck to everyone else who enters!

Jeremy

Im gonna let this run over the weekend and pick a winner monday. still time for entries folks. it only takes 24 hours and some ingenuity.

Well, I went out on Thursday and had an intersting time. I have been playing with making it all a video and after getting it all together, I apologize for what you are about to watch. It just seems awfully cheesy, but it is supposed to be Bear Grylls like, right.... It was actually fun except when the goose tried and attack me. Found out later, she was in the middle of laying eggs. If it was a real thing, I would have just needed a pig to make a great breakfast! I did start a fire using my fire steel which was a first for me.

Well, the video is still "processing so I will get on here as soon as it starts working. I will post some photos if is doesn't start soon.
