Bear Grylls VS Les Stroud Knife Deathmatch!

The Helle knives Temagami was made in collaboration with Les Stroud, or at least endorsed by him, and is an excellent knife. http://www.helle.no/products/knives/temagami/

It is also excellent that Helle offers the Temagami in both triple laminated carbon and stainless steels.

As for the Gerber and Camillus junk...well I guess that tells you what I think.

This is where I also stand. I still plan on getting a Bear Grylls plain edge because it's not fair to bitch about a knife when you haven't used it

I think if you can read the specs (third rate steel) and see the design, it's fair to pass comment though. We mostly only use knives that we buy, and why would you use something that looks like a piece of junk. If people choose to buy these knives, and report that they're great knives, then maybe they're worth listening to, maybe. Personally I can't see why anyone would buy the knives this thread relates to.

For Jack Black: Scandinavians (such as my Norwegian ancestors) are noted for being very stubborn and hardheaded. That may explain how they managed to survive without celebrity signature knives. They even managed to survive a diet of lutefisk and lefsa while sailing around in open Viking warships.

If I had to choose between the two, I would choose one of Dave Cantebury's knives by TOPS or Blind Horse.

I wonder how they managed! :D

My post above is ironic Faiaoga, and I was actually agreeing with you. Of course, ancient Scandinavians managed without celebrity-endorsed knives! A shame they couldn't manage without celebrity-endorsed Greenland! :D Not that it matters at all, but I undoubtedly have Scandinavian ancestors myself, indeed where I live many of our dialect words can be traced back to that part of the world, or are actually Old Norse. Yorkshiremen are also noted for being stubborn and hard-headed! I suspect we and Norwegians are not alone in that hopefully though! :D

I have many Scandinavian knives, including Norwegian knives. You might want to see my comments in the article posted in the thread here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/996339-So-1000-Posts-Brusletto-Knives-Giveaway for example. You should have a go and get yourself a Brusletto Fiske-Sprett if you don't already have one.

The Helle knife, endorsed or otherwise, looks like a great knife, the others, I'll pass on thanks, as I'm sure you would yourself.

Jack

Jack Black: I really enjoyed reading the article you posted. Please know that I am not upset in any way by your remarks. My Norwegian ancestors came to America about 150 years ago, so my only real contact with Norway is a very brief visit with my family when I was quite young. It is a beautiful country but very rugged, and I can see why they developed effective knives.

In my own small collection, I have a knife and sheath made by a local craftsman in our ancestral village. It is very similar to the Brusletto or Helle knives. My father gave it to me, and I will pass it on to my own son.

They both sold out and the knives from either of those two are as bad as each other. At least Les did seem to try and take the good way be endorsing a real knife that could be used is said situations, but he still sold out in the end. You could get a hand forged carbon steel parang, golok or mountain knife for the same price or even less that would just laugh at any of the "knives" in question here.

So, as a relative newbie just getting into knives, and celebrity endorsement aside, who would everyone recommend for a 'survival knife'? Fixed blade, or folder? Why?

If you want a good "Survival Knife" i wouldnt go with the Bear grylls line or the Les stroud line, Check out Esse knives, Ka-bar(Becker) or Cold steel. Just to name a few.

Amazing how you all forget the ability to smash up a rock for a sharp and serated knife after watching these melo dramatic programmes.

I wouldnt ever use a survival knife to survival, ill use something thats wasteable and not make waste from a knife. Tramping can make use of blunt knives or sharpen a bit of sink lol.
You never know how long youll be stranded in some cases so looking for your best tool to make firewood or process hard hides means your an idiot. Use the disposable nature (stones).

Them monkeys got documentarys to sell equiptment or how to wastean edge in seconds when you may need it for couple weeks..

Survival knives are labelled to sell to uneducated, and misguided, rant over.

A manufactured Blades a last resort. When you gonna need that?

Take this back.
Easy to get off on one when it comes to marketing strategies.

Manufactured blades just make ease of a situation like survivalism, i.e energy excersion from flinting etc.
Youll never find serations better than on a flint

Specs

Keen edge retention.... probs at least d2 steel
Weather resistant materials
Easy to sharpen.
Full tang.
Preferable comes with a sharpener attatched or one you attatched and a fire steel that holds some tinder dry
Price doesnt matter, unless manufacturer known to make bodge low ends.

Those three words there are priceless. :D

Makes me sad that Les never endorsed the knife he actually USED on his show, the Buck Special. Wonder why.

That's really nice Faiaoga. I'm sure you've got a good story for that other thread

That's why when I go out in the woods, I cut down trees with my teeth...like the noble beaver.
Thank God you showed up to show us we don't need these knives we've all been wasting our time with.:D

You can carry on pretending they are worth the value and impulse and just keep them in their boxes in the cupboard or leave them behind glass doors forever more, keep them in unused condition to re sell or trade in without too much loss, yet also pretending you have a years experience with it bigging up a company or model to someone else yet not realising your selling someone else product to attempt to gain popularity or whatever your in need of mentally or self asteem wise ;)

Wait... what? rofl

So what you are saying is that... if we recommend a knife on the forums, all we are doing is offering free advertising for the manufacturer while all we are really trying to do is be 'cool'?

I can't say anything of Bear, but I know for a fact that in at least one episode of survivorman, Les does smash a rock to make a "knife" and has used other methods of cutting or scraping things solely because, as he states in the episode, he doesn't want to needlessly dull his knife if he doesn't have to.

No im saying people buy a knife pretend they use it and know all about it but later seen selling it bnib or lnib lol.
companys thrive of false claims to sell their naff for more due to someone claiming their a know it all.
Only helping the companys no one else, blindly
