Bear Grylls was fired from Discovery

Well I guess im the only one who thinks it was still a fun show to watch.. Heck of a lot better then most shows at the same time. I also picked up an idea or two from him. There is something to learn from everyone and everything.

Nah...I enjoyed his show, but some of those who only "survive" on their computers could google better options than he presented.

When taken as strictly entertainment, it was great.

My opinion is that while BG may have had some artistic license in scripting the shows, it is probable that the actual script and locations were not his to decide. Maybe his parting with DC will be a breath of fresh air as far as him appearing in shows with more realisticly written scenarios and better thought out scripts. And if not, for those who are fans of the past DC shows, I seriously doubt that DC is going to destroy the tapes and never air them again. Look for a "Best Of..." coming to a DC channel soon. And no doubt BG will still be paid residuals for each airing.

What, exactly, was in those scripts he refused to film, we don't know. Neither he nor DC is saying. One can only imagine if it was so hidious/dangerous/humiliating that BG refused to film them.

I do not regard his service as a weekend warrior to amount to being a "stinking reservist." Except for the months recovering from injury, there is no reason to believe he did not attend weekend drill or summer camp. Reservists, including those in the U.S., perform a valuable function and do so voluntarily. In case of war, they put their lives on the line, as his Territorial Army unit, has actually done during it's history.

He did not attempt the famously rugged "Qualification" for the regular army SAS.

He does, as noted, model extremely foolish behavior that would decrease the odds of survival.

i dont like his show very much becuase he has his whole camrea crew...
he should have gone alone, thats why i normaly would watch surviorman if i had a choice.
a main part of surviveing is mental stibility, for all i know he could be eating all kinds of stuff with his crew off camera.
that being said i do watch every once in a while.:)

.

My bad, I guess "weekend warrior" is somehow less derogatory than "stinking reservist". I sincerely apologize to all the weekend warriors I may have offended, with the exception of Mr Grylls, I could care less if he is offended or not. Now if I am going to continue to survive on my computer I need to go so I can google some more survival techniques. Chris

Nooo, I was his biggest fan! Discovery channel, I know you guys are scientific experts and always dead-on-right with what you do and tell.
I will miss the educative times when he drank piss, found supermarket meat in a cleanskinned carcass by pure chance, did the "survivor" thingy next to a parkinglot with the camera-crew and taught how to taught all of us how to successfully flee from search teams with pretense of dangerous adventures!

Oh I still remember it like yesterday when a crew member wore a bear-suit to scare him and he made it look like he was about to lose it hahahah!
Grylls will always be my improvisationmaster with his extremely useful "junk" he found by absolutely random chance in fitting lenght and sizes. Not to forget his original unique quality knives with handles made of indestructionium. Seriously, that company should name themselves Gryllbears. He MADE Gerber the best quality knifecompany period and gave china produced knives a national good reputation. I heard the CIA sent an agent who batoned his way from the US to Northkorea recently with his "Ultimate-Knife" and gave Kim Jong a heart attack with his combined discovery-channel knowledge.

Sweet mother of pearl - Man vs. Wild was just a tv show. Not a black ops training video. Not a "how to drink elephant urine to survive" documentary. It was just a tv show, the purpose of which was to attract viewers to generate ad revenue for the network. And it was very successful at achieving that goal.

Jack Bower on 24 didn't actually disarm a nuclear device with his teeth either. And no one would swim through a cave with a handmade torch if given the choice. Its all fiction. Just saying.

Its pretty corny to dissect the morality, veracity and wilderness creds of a tv character. Bear Grylls, Nutnfancy and a bunch of other entertainers are castigated, dissected and masticated as if their fictional personas are somehow relevant here in the real world.

They aren't. Its just entertainment.

Very well put!

"Reality Television" seems to be about as far from reality as you can get. Shoot your television; get outside!

One of the things that really ground my gears about him was.......in the desert in incredible heat with the sun cooking his noggin....no hat. Below 0 freezing rain/snow......no hat/toque.

Might have ruined his profile to the camera.

After the ass to mouth sea enema, hmm..it would really take some imagination :D

While I don't go as far as August about being a reserve or part time SAS, honestly, I get really tired about people trumping up a person's military record in order to qualify their expertise based on something they did in a completely different enterprise. Bear may have contributed to military service and kudos for him doing so. But how does that relate at all to the bullcrap he presents on his TV show. If anything his behavior is a diservice to the armed services that trained him right only to have him bungle things on air. People who perform military service should be celebrated for their service. But it doesn't exempt them for their stupidity or critique in the things they do outside of their service. Just like I'll bust Rock6 ball's for the things he says on W&SS (Hardly :D :D :D), but that would not devalue his service contributions to the country.

So, lets get beyond the BG - SAS thing. BG is not a spokesman for SAS and nobody should be defending him because he once had some kind of affiliation. He made his fame and build his reputation on the actions he did. We should not hold SAS accountable for those actions and therefore shouldn't give BG a get out of jail free card because he was once part of them.

He does contribute freely to scouting. I'll kudo any man for that. That doesn't mean I would drink after him though.

WHOA, hold up a minute, I am not devaluing anyone's service to his country, besides Bear Grylls of course. I AM devaluing someone's service to their country as a discriminator for being a survival expert. If you say I was a SERE instructor at Camp McCall, or even I completed SERE training, I might give you a little credit, although I know some real tools that successfully completed SERE training, if you are a bonafied member of a Special Forces Group, especially CAG, I will give you a little cred.

If you say I was an MP stationed in Panama so I know more about survival than you, or I was in the reserves so I know more about survival than you, regardless of unit or affiliation, then I don't care and don't think you know one iota more, probably less, than any hillbilly or countryboy in the US.

The military is big place with lots of jobs and I am awful leery of anyone that puts their military service at the begining of their resume unless it is for the specific job they did in the military. Chris

Having a friendly reminder is great for remaining humble :D

This is where most in the service get into trouble; using typical training and trying to make is sound like it was official certification. I've done a lot of cool things, but just because I served with a Special Forces battalion doesn't give me the right to use that as certified training. Hell, I've known Soldiers working with the SERE program that did nothing but support or were "role-players"...they weren't SERE qualified! Serving one's country is an honor and should be recognized as such, but you soil that when you exaggerate your service for profit. I'm not saying that a guy that's done several years as a SERE instructor can't use that on his resume, but several exaggerate their service records...or at least embellish them to the point where I start questioning motives and integrity.

As August West mentioned also…a certificate of training doesn’t necessarily mean they’re an expert. There area lots a “badge” schools that just give you the initial qualification, not necessarily the experience. I think most of us here recognize that a certificate only qualifies for completion, it doesn’t necessarily quantify experience. Combat experience doesn’t mean experience in actual kinetic combat fights or operations for everybody in uniform; there’s inherent danger, but I’m not a trigger puller anymore…in fact, I get to run a meeting every Thursday at the Green Beans and sip on my vanilla chai latte:D I see somebody like IA Woodsman, Kevin E. and several others that actively participate in outdoors training or provide on-line classes as reputable and experienced. You don’t see Mors Kochanski bragging about his time in the Canadian Navy did you? As much as I value education, it’s not the certificates that give you mastery of skills or experienced valued by others.

If Bear would have done an extreme sky-diving show…he would be more than qualified. It’s all good in the end. We had plenty to discuss over the past six years because of him and I now know I’d rather be prepared then give myself an enema or drink elephant dung juices!

:thumbup: Nice post Rock6. Leave it to the real hero's to speak in a frank and open fashion...

Oh well, I'm sure we're not done with the BG schlock yet and he will be looking for another venue. Maybe 80's style action movies will make a return with him as a lead? BG is beloved because his is athletic and even though he runs around doing stupid things, he looks good and confident doing it. Movies would be perfect for him. The real question though is would he be able to survive sleeping the night in a mangy movie-set trailor and forego the 5-star hotels he's become accustomed to? Time will tell :)
