bear vs shotgun...

Right on! ( My recommendation as well--$.02 worth)

I usually have my Alpine Ruger Redhawk (4") loaded with Garret 310 gr hard SWC or Buffalo Bore 310 grs. in it for bear.

MMMmmm Bowen! I want to get an Alpine conversion when I can shake loose some mad money! I'm Jealous, BA!:D

As far as a camping rifle goes, Chris, a Stainless 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun'll take care of whatever is needed. I've got mine set up with a Brockman winged rear peep sight and a deccelerator recoil pad. I highly recommend it. Thanks to the wonderful people at Pachmyer, Now it only hurts ONE way.

Cuttin' Craig,

I got another Redhawk which I'm planning to send to Bowen for another Alpine conversion, but this time it will be in .50 A.E. with the full moon clips.

I shoot too much heavy duty stuff in my .44 Maggies that my S&W 29 went out of time three times already. The Redhawk hasn't gone out of time for me yet. Maybe later an ALpine in .454 would be cool.

Also, the 45-70 Buffalo Bore ammo is awesome on big criiters and also drug dealers wearing bullet resistant vests!!!!! :)

Dean Grennel said ( my personal favorite) that he's had 5 or 6 model 29's wear out but his .41 is as tight as the day it left the factory. (nosler number 3)

Those darn Rugers are machines. I like them better than Wesson or Taurus too. My first handgun was a Ruger .41 Bisley, my seond a ss Ruger Redhawk 5.5" .41

I managed a gun store a few years and if you have any inkling about me through my posts know I can become possessed on a topic. I learned more about guns in three years than I did about Psychology in 4. Sometimes I surprise myself and actually sound like i know something-
-but it 's just another opinion. Find the weapon you shoot well and shoot often. Heavy is best for bears..but a guy with a .270 could take out a shoulder/knee and anchor the beast....if he had time

Phil is right

I've always wanted a Bowen anything... in a revolver you could load the .50 Action Express up a notch..whew

I have had my share of S&W M29's and M57's..(.44 and .41 mags).

I have always like the M57 and the .41 Mag better than the .44 mag. I hand load so I can tailor my loads for what I wanted to do.

You would be suprised at what a 225 gr hard cast SWC will do if you push it behind enough H110.:D

Well I'll be darned! The N frame and the 41 are a match made in heaven.

I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 I like, but I've modified it a bit with a shorter barrel...and prefer large bullets in the .44 mag calibre- settles it right down.

The .41 always shoots settled down, like hitting a baseball with the right part of the bat.. feels correct, well designed cartridge.

thanks for the input, everyone...

the gun is a remington 870 express with an 18" barrel and synthetic stocks (its almost the same as a police magnum)... holds 6 + 1 in the pipe... ive tried the Selliers & Belliot 2 3/4" 00 and was very satisfied with the results... i found them to be quite comfortable to shoot... i went through 50 of them with no problems... it was those federal slugs that did me in (the recoil and blast from that first shot literally stunned me)... ill have to try the bird shot and trap loads (shooting through walls BAD), as well as the brenneke slugs... a gun isnt any good if you cant control it while youre shooting...

a side saddle shell carrier and ghost ring sights will be added this month...

i originally purchased the gun for home defense and pure shooting pleasure, not to hunt bears... however, when i was up in MN last year camping, there were reports of black bears in the area... that and im planning a camping trip to CA this summer, and theres mountain lions in them thar hills... i figure if the gun will take down a bear, itll put a mountain lion down as well... while id much rather just let the wild life do its own thing while im doing mine, its a good idea to be prepared... after all, its better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun (or kuk for that matter) and not have it...
