But with the resiprene-c the relatively minor damage seems much greater than it is because I don't feel capable of repairing it.
Well, as with Busse, same applies to Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat, "Lifetime Warranty"!
I would personally feel bad and guilty for doing certain types of damage to a product from a company I respect and then send in for warranty. If I were to bash a handle in with a sledge hammer till crushed and then ask for warranty work, I wouldn't feel right about it. But, the damage can be fixed. I would offer to pay, but my guess is that the Busse Bros. would take care of it.
If the damage is minor enough, Res-C can be shaped by cutting and sanding. You can cut Res-C fairly easily like "Whittling". Sanding is NOT hard. Sand just like you would on wood, but sandpaper rolls and dusts off rubber dust instead of wood dust. And no worries about sanding with the grain on Res-C.
But, you can't use belt sanders or any fast sanding machine. Too much heat from friction obviously melts Res-C.
... I could even make new handle slabs from the ground up.
If you can make new handle slabs from the ground up on a full tang knife, it isn't much more difficult to make slabs for a hidden tang knife from the ground up. You just have to router or cut out a channel in both halves of the slabs, use only one pin and more epoxy.
