In my continuing quest for more beckers to add to the enclave, I recently acquired a bk5 to go with it's bretheren, including the bk2, bk3, bk4, bk7, bk9, and bk9s most which I have more then one of...
I know many of you like the bk5 as a kitchen knife, camp prep knife etc,,, but handling it I think it would make a great fighter! Have any of you modified your bk5's to make them more "fighter" worthy, including handle and blade modifications?? I would love to see pics if possible... Just trying to get a handful or so of ideas before I take off and start butchering my bk5!

Nick has a awesome 5 that he put a tanto point on. It is killer, looks even better in person

If I was gonna pick a knife to fight with, that would be the one.

Its light, floats in the hand, and has a wicked upswept blade, and thin profile. For slicing and stabbing, it would be a powerhouse.

The Israeli's were looking into making it their standard issue at one point, which, is pretty badass.

For a fighter mod, I would sharpen the swedge, and impart a serious texturing to the handle for grip.

Other than that, I think its pretty ready to go as is.

Would you happen to have a link to the thread by chance, or is it in the general becker pics thread?

I have no idea...... his username is MyWifeThinksImCrazy

I have seen it posted here, but no idea where. I handled it at the Gathering

I agree Moose, I was thinking something similar to what you are saying...would like to check out Nick's version as well if I can find the thread... otherwise, sharpening the swedge, perhaps micarta scales textured something like the "rocky mountain tread design" that tops uses on some of their blades...

Thank you for the info Warrior!! That is very much like my vision, adding some jimping, taking some material off the butt end perhaps,, I wish I had the sanders and tools that some of ya'll do, but I will probably end up searching out one of our great craftsmen here to do the work for me!

It's designed to slice through flesh. People are made out of flesh.

Wonder why the Israelis decided against it?

Tanto-ize, sharpen the swedge, jimping at the thumb, and I would also do texturized kraton handles like Kabar uses on their fighters.

Ever since I stripped and stippled my 5, I've been fighting the urge to put an edge on the swedge. That 5 is a seriously fast chunk of steel in the hand. It's even more vicious since I convexed it. Add in the ability to back cut, and you've got a serious fighting knife on your hands.

Maybe I should stop fighting the urge and just do it.

If you're handy you could build some new scales with an integral front guard. The thing that scares me about the 5 as a fighter is slipping forward onto the razor sharp edge!

The tanto mod is the only one I'd make. Nick's is so bada$$. A sharp back frightens me, seems more dangerous to the user.
Jimping on that swedge would reduce the already limited surface area against your thumb, I'd probably skip it. A little traction on the handles...
Mmmm..... donut skewer.

OMG, who is going to be the first to tanto a BK-15?!?

Excuse my ignorance, but asking questions is how we learn.

What's such a big deal about a tanto point? It effects such a small area, seems to put the cutting edge at the wrong angle, not to mention make the stabbing action of the point more blunt. In the -5's case is seems to ruin it for effective food prep work.

Please explain the benefits of a tanto to me. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I thought there was a good reason...

Pm me and I'll send you the info of the guy who did it for me.

I'll post some pix later.

I agree completely.
BUT IT'S SO COOOL!

(actually I'd prefer the 5's point to be a bit lower relative to the centerline, but that's no excuse for a tanto-style front-end)
BUT IT'S SO COOL!

Seriously, I don't think there's any benefit except the heart going pitter-pat at the sight of it. Or perhaps its the eyes going anime-wide.
