Becker BK5, First Time Using (Photo Heavy)

Great pics and nice fire piston tutelage, Dubz. With that choil it looks like you can actually get your entire Warrior mitten on the handle! ;)

sadly a lesser bought model.
Nailed it. What a shame really. I didn't get a chance to use her as much as I wanted, but it's one sweet blade. If it would ever stop raining here, I have a small brush pile in the back yard just waiting to be chopped up.

Thanks man. The pistons are a blast to use. I think I'm going to give a bow drill a whirl next time. I always thought the choil looked a little on the large side, but it really isn't at all. Fit me perfectly.

Great thread and excellent pics. Have really enjoyed it.

Thanks man, appreciate it. I love going to my get away and playing with the blades, but I've been missing going on hikes. Need to remedy that real soon.

Just read thru this again. Great post man. I thought I had replied on page one but now I remember my phone goofed up when I clicked "post reply" and I got frustrated and said "f" it.
Any who...
Yeah, good stuff man and great write up. The choil is great on the 5, there's plenty of belly and it gives a nice balance when used. I like the idea of adding jimping.
I have a fire piston that I got in my stocking a couple of years back that's still in the package! Wtf's wrong with me!? I just always forget I even have it because I never heard of it and didn't even know what it was. Somehow the wife knew something I didn't when she got it for me. Def gotta dig it out and giver a go. Looks like you've encouraged a bunch of folks around here to checkem out. Thanks for taking the time to snap all those pics and getting the up here for us!

I was really happy how well the 5 worked out. I could feather using one spot of the blade, using the length of the blade, and even just using near the tip. It's one slicey beast of a knife.

Fire pistons are a blast to use. Pretty easy really.

Hi Warrior,

I read your other thread on the 4, another great write up. In the thread you said you liked the BK9 better. If you had to choose between the BK5 and BK9, which would you choose?

What do you other guys think also?

Thanks,

Geoff

Depends on the tasks at hand.

The 5 is more a slicer but it can chop, though not as well as the 4 or 9.

In my kitchen test, the 5 was second only to my santuko for food processing.

For processing large game, it works very well.

Right now, Kabar as a special deal going on where you can buy one BK5, get a 4 or 5 for free. That's only $47 each shipped. Or buy a BK9 + Micarta scales and get a 5 and a 4 for free. Or ...

Personally, the 9 over the 5. Love the 5, don't get me wrong, but the 9 is still my fav. The 9 is thicker, chops better, and batons better. At least, in the sense that it doesn't chew up a baton. That said, I do need to get my 5 out and use it more. It's a hell of a blade. Light and fast.

For a big knife people expect the 5 to act like the 9 but the 9 is made more to be a chopper, and still be good at a lot of other things, where the 5 is made to be a slicer and still be good at a lot of other things. I think most of the guys around here like their big blades to be choppers, so most lean towards the 9. I really like them both. I think I would have a hard time choosing between the two. They are both different, but both very multi use utilitarian knives that are also a ton of fun to use. As much as I love bent blades, the 5 and the 9 have way more appeal for me than the 4. Now the 21 however .....

I can't believe this was your first time with the 5. It's been my favorite ever since I started using it. Just wish I could take the pictures line you do brotha.

I debated the 5 for some time. Ended up trading a Skeletool CX for it. Really cool blade.

I feel that with a 5 and a good saw you can do anything. Around here you need a saw in your pack. So I use my saw to cut up the pieces of wood and my 5 to baton/process the wood.
