Becker Field Bag Picture Thread

Like I said, I *think* that was what I heard, but given how many people were having several different conversations at once, there is a very real chance I could have been wrong. I want to make that abundantly clear to all, I could most definitely be wrong.

Yeah man, got it. :) I was just saying. Thanks.

as well, this very forum is the "insider connection".

we have access to Ethan Becker (the boss).

we have access to the process, the maker, protos, photos, and so on.

early access is COOL

they could just make you wait with zero information.

for the faithful, we get to know things, in advance, and be the first to pounce on something special.

personally, i'm all for it. even if i didn't get one first ;)

or second *sniff sniff cry* :D

but i WILL GET ONE

pricing, tricky. need a field bag NOW? well, generic military field bags can be had.

are they exactly like Ethan's? no. are they close? maybe. they do have a strap :)

imho, sit back, enjoy the ride. it's bumpy.

as for demand? they should sell well enough, if competition over 20 year old backpacks is any indication.

There will, of course, always be a core cadre of loyalists who'll hang on indefinitely waiting for a new product with "The Master's Name" on it.
Which is fine.
I merely mention some basic marketing truths, take it or leave it. :)

I have about 30 shoulder bags, kinda like 'em, from surplus through commercial to THE shoulder bag- the official MKVII Indy Bag.
A more efficient design, or a more appealing look, is always of interest to me.

Elsewhere, I've given each son-in-law a Becker as his only serious fixed blade.
I have two here myself.

The Becker name has a certain value, but I won't buy anything solely because his name or anybody else's name is on it.
I'm neither alone in that nor in saying I also won't wait forever on teasers that have no apparent organization behind the product.

Timing, as I said, is important.
And, there's also a certain risk in attaching too much of a Special Insider Club Only feel to a new product.

Everybody's entirely free to disregard everything I've said. :)

at this boot-up stage, we're in "custom territory". teasers are exactly appropriate. hand made. usa made. slow to produce.

you wouldn't expect a high end knife maker to necessarily be cranking out product.

eventually they'll streamline things, but right now? it's less disorganized, than simply there ain't much to say. < 50 bags in the wild so far.

the production ones should still be handmade, but the process vastly streamlined. cutting will be mechanical, and faster. they might even get a few more sewers? who can say.

but right now, it IS special, and we appreciate it.

for you? maybe not so much. hang around. you might get your mitts on one earlier than most. esp nice if you are a bag whore :D we don't know ANYONE like there here.

KelTec is infamous for producing products that took years to get out. they sell quite well, with nearly no advertising. they are in DEMAND. heck, they sell for more than MSRP.

some marketing models are to be ignored :D

My point is not a fixation on instant gratification, but a long-running chatter on at least two Internet forums building up interest in a new product, with nobody involved in the project being able to provide anything more than ticklers & a reference to a "manufacturer" that only has a face page & a CONTACT button that gets no response to emails.

It appears (I said appears) to be a disorganized process where nobody knows anything, and I'm merely trying to say that timing can be an important factor in how it's introduced.

Build up too much attention too early, drag it on for months with ticklers, and give no one any useful info on where or when availability begins, and you can alienate potential buyers who'll have moved on to something else by the time it finally does come out in volume.

Ruger used to take so much flak over introducing new models that'd take most of a year to appear (losing customers who would have bought while interest was high but spent their money elsewhere when they got tired of waiting) that they changed policy to not even allow employees to talk publicly about a new model until it was already in the distributor pipeline.
No announcements until the product was available.

For those more interested in a quality bag than whose name's on it, wait too long & those people buy elsewhere.
Just suggesting maybe holding off on further photos & teasers until there's actually product available?
Or not.

Patience grasshopper. No one is working up the populace into a frenzy; that seems mostly self-induced.
To my knowledge, no promises were ever made about timeline. Hopes expressed maybe, but no promises.

I, for one, like knowing what's coming eventually, and I don't suffer from instant gratification syndrome.
Case in point... I don't really like Randall knives that much, but I've contemplated ordering one several times just for the Zen-like, five-year wait. :p

We fussed about tweeners for ages around here before they were out. Well worth the wait, I'm sure the bag is gonna be the same way.

Great review Derek. All those photos and features sold me. As soon these become available I'm picking one up. Excited.

it's kinda steep but handmade in the USA it's a very fair price. And the more expensive it is the better I'll take care of it....

people don't seem to cry when they buy a Kifaru.

you order the bag. they MAKE it for you. you pay millions of dollars.

people want the best? thus pay for it.

surprises are in store. oh yes.

Folks at this stage all I can say is that Karen is peddling as fast as she possibly can...... We tried to devise a system that was fair and gave my best customers (many of whom are friends) the first shot...... Trying to do the right thing here and as all my friends know perfection is not my strong suit......... I do try..... If I could run a sewing machine I would chip in but, you really would not like the result...... The job Karen is doing is impeccable and therefore somewhat slow...... Really good stuff is not always instant....... Karen is, in many ways the sewing equivalent of some of our better custom knifemakers......I am extremely happy that Karen is the one doing the bags as she took a pretty good idea of mine and refined it into a wonderful product....... Patience was picked by the Great Kahn (a very impatient guy) as the first virtue...... I too, am a very impatient guy and I had to wait eighteen months to get where we are........ So, patience please, we are trying hard....

Some things are just worth waiting for and this is one of them. It's a great design and well executed.

I don't own any Becker 's, hard times right now. Someday soon I will, and this bag, this wonderful bag, will be worth saving for and waiting for. You just keep on keeping on Mr. Becker, I'm patient and I'll wait as long as it takes. :-)

ron, we can remedy that. I've got some BK-14 "seconds" that Ka-Bar gave me to dole out, and one of them is yours if you want it. All you need to do is send me an address and agree that you'll use it.

Just click my username in red and send me an email.

I really like that bag, but can't plan to hang that much weight off of one shoulder for long periods of time anymore.
