Was it slated to be removed anyway, or was the property owner made an offer they couldn't refuse?
My mom has a couple 100ft-tall evergreens and 3 oaks on her property (where I grew up). It would break my heart to see them cut down. They might be as old as the house. :-o

They look for trees that are close to the end of there life cycle. After Christmas The tree will be cut into boards and used for habitat for humanity.

trees age out - esp in cities they can easily become root bound and damaged and then you have a 50-100 foot tall charismatic mega tree that ways many tonnes and it's DANGEROUS. so, they are managed.
ideally, they are managed when the lumber is still useful.
