Here's what I do. I just ground down my bits to bottom out on working table and heat and plunge cut with something I made.

The softer woods would not be a good idea. They have durability problems. A heavy wood that is hard works best.
go to the web site woodworkers.com and use them as a library. The woods I prefer are ironwood, satine, and any stabilized burl.
Horn is also a great material for a knife handle either in a scale or full round.
