Ethan Becker recently attended the Camillus liquidation auction and was successful in buying back his name, his patents and designs.

This was posted over at the Camillus forum and I thought it would be of interest to many here who might not see it over there. Looks like I may have to get a new Becker knife of my very own soon.

Becker Knife and Tool Joins KA-BAR Knives

==================

Olean, NY

It is with pleasure that I can announce that Ethan Becker of Becker Knife & Tool (BK & T) has joined KA-BAR Knives. BK & T was founded in 1986 by Ethan Becker, an avid outdoorsman of 45 years. Ethan spent 25 years searching for an ideal “big knife” and finally combined his two favorites, the Kukri and a WWII Survival “Bolo,” to make the Machax. Becker is the former president of the mountain climbing equipment company Colorado Mountain Industries (CMI) where he developed the CMI Figure 8 Descender and Hexachoks. His innovative concepts began the development of CMI’s 5000 Ascender, Rescue Pulley, the CMI cup, and Eagle Industries’ Becker Patrol Pack.

Ethan makes his home in Tennessee with his wife, artist and author Susan. Besides dreaming of big sharp things to make, Ethan spends time practicing and studying a wide array of survival techniques. He teaches weaponcraft, law enforcement mountaineering and survival skills. As co-author of the landmark cookbook, Joy of Cooking, Ethan wields a chef’s knife teaching cooking classes and researching new recipes.

Ethan brings great experience, designs, and enthusiasm to the table for a new era of BK & T. Our two companies have many similarities that will only enhance each others strengths.

We warmly welcome Ethan to our team and look forward to making “Knives That Work For A Living.”

After all the sad news over the last couple of years, it's great to have such a happy announcement.

I'll still be working on acquiring the old ones! I need a Necker and a Companion pretty badly.

Glad to hear the news is official. Wonder how long till production starts?

Holy Crap - 'Joy of Cooking' is one of my most used reference books. I even pulled off the book to verify his name - there it is right on my kitchen counter!

Now I really have to get one of his knives!

It takes a while to get new knives into production. Of course, a lot of experience was gained by Ethan and others as the original patterns were introduced by Camillus, so some of the previous "birthing pains" can be avoided this time.

It has not been announced when the new BK&T knives can be expected on the market, but even if they began prelimiary design and tooling back in June when he was seen in the company of Ka-Bar folks at Blade, it would probably be the end of this year before the first pattern could roll out.

Then there is the question as to what steel and heat treat will be used. If I understand correctly, CarbonV and it's propriatary heat treat were two features which really made the BK&T knives great.

If I remember what was posted by Phil Gibbs, former Camillus designer, it could also take several years for a full line of the knives to be tooled and released. Also, he mentioned that Ethan had about a dozen designs (including a folder) which Camillus never produced, so there is the possibility of not only seeing some favorite patterns revived and tweaked, but some entirely new patterns introduced.

Hey, I heard you got it for $5 less, and the quickcrete thrown in too! :D

But, no, I'm standing FIRM on that $585.00 offer price. I think this whole "Becker is baaaaaack" thing is a just a giant internet rumor designed to keep innocent knife entrepreneurs (like me) from turning a decent profit from knife collectors like, well, like you.

Seriously, you can't believe anything you read on the internets. No way is the Becker line coming back into production. Believe none of the rumors and only half of the lies. $585 for a Becker Necker is a heck of a deal at a tenth of the price. You should snap it up pronto!

:p

WOOHOO!!! I really like using my Becker/BlackJack Campanion. I wanted a Brute but was not thrilled with the Camillus versions. I think KBar is capable of makeing them with a tougher heat treat. Maybe they could even give them a convex edge again!!!
