Becker Knives....Do You Like Them??

I like them and I would like to have the BK9 to play with outdoors. However I think the BK5 or BK17 would actually be more useful for me.

Lol. with due respect to Beckerheads. I'm sure they're great knives but profits are being had.

Honestly as long as customer service is good they can make as much as they want. As a consumer we have the power to buy or not. With as many knife companies as their is KaBar knows to keep its dedicated customer base they must rely on more than history and tradition.

I do think that Beckers are a little high in the price however. I mean the USMC and Mk1 are dirt cheap, and I would imagine they take more work to put together.

Economies of scale. ;)

I really like the Camillus and KaBar Becker's. I have about 12 total. They are in the same category, quality, and price as all my Ontario RD7, RD9, etc series knives. Both factory made. Both USA made. Both great wood batoning knives.

I'm sure kabar does make a profit thats what they are in business for after all. Taking that as a given, for a knife in the 50 to 100 dollar range they deliver excellent quality and good ergos. Yeah they could use micarta or better sheaths but then the price shoots up fast and the grivory and sheaths they come with are very useable. If you want to spend a bit more get a swamp rat or scrapyard or esee. If you want to spend more the options are pretty much limited by your imagination and wallet.

So yeah I think they are a bargin.

I'll follow suit, and say that Beckers are probably the best blade for your money. I own several, and am not very easy with them (batoning a Necker through thick logs)....I say try it, you might like it!

Do you think the Necker would be to large for edc? I live in a city and typically carry a spyderco tenacious. Always have jeans on so pockets ftw.

I picked one up the other day but really could make up my mind since I hadnt actually tried carrying it all day.

Really, it's too big for a neck knife. I got the belt clip for mine.

I have a BK16. It is a well made and robust knife. Great for all general camping/hiking/outdoor chores. It is not a "fancy" knife but rather a "beater"...the more used and worn the better.
I do not like the sheath very much. It is well built and the pouch is nice but, to me, it is too long and a bit to bulky/floppy for me. I think I'd rather have either a kydex or better yet a leather Nordic style.

I strongly suspect that US knife manufacturers are pretty much on the financial "edge" like nearly all other US manufacturing. That is why we have seen the number of US manufacturers dwindle to just a few, the remainder being made in China of 440 stainless.

FYI, for those that don't know, 440 can be processed at pretty high speed, perfect for modern mass production. Tool steel must be more carefully worked lest it over heat and ruin, hense the cost difference.

Don't forget the Doug Ritter RSK Mk2 Perseverance.

Its a modified Becker knife. 6" long blade designed by Doug Ritter and Ethan Becker. Manufactured with permission from Kabar by Rowen Manufacturing - the same folks that make TOPS and ESEE knives.

Think of it as a BK10 with the nicer blade shape of the the BK2. Personally I prefer the 0.188" thick blade - the BK2 is just too thick for me.

... and a portion of the price goes to support equipped.org - Doug's non-profit foundation that promotes awareness of survival preparedness and provides advice on related gear. Unfortunately I don't think the knife is tax deductible :-o

Do I like or need Becker Knives? No, I just want them! You can't just have one!

Four and counting.

Hmm, perhaps the OP should wander on over to the Becker subforum. Considering it's one of the most active subforums on this site. I'd say that speaks well for the knives, although my opinion might be a bit suspect, being a 'Head and all...

You'll also find that most of us end up customizing our blades. New handle scales, etc. I've even been considering doing a full flat grind on my BK2, just to see how that would feel. I don't really use it ever, so it's been sitting around awaiting an appropriate project.

Get the 5, if ever there was a Becker meat slicer, this is it. Well there is the 16 also but it's kind of small for your application.

Blunt Edge what in the hell is going on with that Bk2? Its........amazing.

I have been wanting to get a Becker for quite some time. I am still debating on which to get but from what I hear, all of them seem to be the best pick...
