Becker Newb, and Customizing my BK10

Soup Monger,

Every time I come back to this thread, I salivate when I see your knife. What an excellent job. That handle material looks excellent.

Codger, very impressive work.

Codger 64 I am impressed at how the knife looks. I have always tried to keep an open mind on all things. To all of you other fabricators of knives - keep modifing to your hearts content.
Thank you all for the lessons in customizing!:)

Thanks for the kind words people.

I've just finished another mod job on a Becker Campanion. :)

Black linen Micarta handle scales with counter sunk allen head screws.

The lanyard tube is made from a solid piece of brass rod to tweak the balance point to just in front of the forefinger.

My new favourite. :)

Cheers.

I have to admit that until this thread and all the awesome knives that have been posted I had never liked the looks of the Becker line.

They looked like a hunk of steel with little thought given to finish or appearance what so ever. Even worse I hate epoxy painted anything as most of the time it is just to cover up poor finish work.

Seeing these that were posted here, the Micarta grip panels to replace the plastic, having just bought a 1 inch belt sander and having a buddy with a full blown knife/saw sharpening, grinding, polishing shop I had to have a few.

Seeing the post about the state Camillus is in I figured I had better get what I wanted now so I bought a BK9, BK2 an BK1 last night in hopes of even coming close too a few beauties here.

I gotta get banned soon, this board is costing me way too much money already :D

it's kinda nice that camillus offeres the optional micarta handles. sweet. custom is of course, another level...

the blades themselves are awesome. they're hard use, and the coating keeps them mostly rust free for people who can't or won't be bothered to keep a knife that can rust ... clean. i don't know about the busses, but they're coated too, as are some other fine knives.

of course, quite a lot of crap knives are coated to hide the crap. not the case here with becker :> the old beckers had no coatings though. well, the OLD ones. awesome blades.

The finish beneath the coating on the Becker's that I have modded was very rough and pitted and uneven and took a long time to sort out.

I got my Micarta scales from Justin at Ranger knives and smoothed them out.

Here is a pre-'73 Schrade Walden that I had. Someone used the Delrin handle for a hammer. I am rescaling it in birdseye burl maple. Haven't added the brass compression rivets yet as you can see, and the original patina is still on the 1095HC carbon steel blade. Still, it makes for a nice home-made custom I won't be afraid to carry and use.

Codger

Hey Codger,
That is a nice looking handle on that old S-W. If you need some compression rivets let me know & I will send you some gratis. Loveless bolts might look nice on there too, brass with stainless center or vice versa. I have some of those too if you would rather try them.
Anyway, send me an email & I will send the rivets to you if you want them. Sometimes it is a pain to buy compression rivets if you only need 3 or 4 as you usually have to buy 25 sets at a time.

Take care,
Dale

This line is High-Larious!!!!! Good stuff. I had only very minor issues with the surface of the steel on my BK10 when I removed the epoxy coating. I almost left it without any polishing at all, and as is, I did very minor work on it. But I like a satin finish on a blade. Especially one that I intend to use mercilessly. Admitedly, its nowhere near as pretty as S-M's. (GREAT work S-M!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm VERY impressed.)

Think of Beckers this way. Its a great way to learn to mod a knife without having to risk messing up an expensive knife. And, hey, the results are awesome. Really, for the money, Beckers are an excellent knife.

And, learning to maintain a carbon steel blade, IMO, is paramount to being a real knife knut!  To me SS has a dead feeling to it. Plus its hard to keep sharp (most alloys that is). And whether a guy will admit it or not, most guys can't sharpen a knife. Carbon steel is the way to go!;)

Carbon steel is nothing knew here having about 30 some Khukuri's and staying ahead of the rust issues.

I received the BK-9 and BK-2 and I was right about them being a big hunk of steel......Does the Combat Bowie get classed as a short sword and I still have the BK-1 in route

The epoxy came right off and the BK-9 was diffenently a blade that needed the cover up. A couple hours in front on hte belt sander and it cleaned up pretty good but it could still use a little more.

I ground the funky thumbrest off and re profiled the upped tip to remove the hump for a more traditional Bowie look and slightly radiused the sharp edged.

Micarta panels are diffenently in order and some good sheaths...The light weight canvas sheath that came with the BK-9 seem about Airsoft quality at best

Ordered the BK-10 and BK-7 to make a complete set so I guess I will have my winter projects in order.

Not the best picture and I need to work on some Natural Micarta grips soon.

After the picture above I hit the belt sander again to refine the upper edge and gave the blade a very slight recurve profile.
