Beckerhead firearms

Shot a couple more squirrels today (and four this past Monday) with my Ruger American Rifle in .22lr. Cleaned 'em with my BK11 (got to start remembering to bring kydex sheaths hunting and NOT leather). Really have to clean up carefully before putting the thing away - bleah.

Nice. I might pick up a Ruger American .22lr one day. Reviews I've seen say the practical accuracy is about the same as a 10/22 but there's something about a bolt gun. Kind of like driving a stick vs an automatic. Though getting a tube-fed rifle might be nice so I can just drop rounds in instead of dealing with detachable mags. I guess one of each is in order.

Just installed an ALG Defense AKT trigger kit in my WASR. Massive difference over the Tapco G2 I had in it and the Tapco was not too bad. The Tapco was pretty light but had a bunch of overtravel and just felt really mushy. The AKT isn't particularly crisp I would say, but it has a lighter pull and feels like there's no overtravel at all. On my gun the safety did block the trigger without the roll pin but the sear engagement was absolutely at the brink of breaking so I installed the pin and filed it down just enough for the safety to actually work but now the trigger has almost no movement with the safety on and the sear engagement is much better. I had to just break the back edge on the roll pin though because the saftey was just barely catching the pin when I flipped it on and off so I gave it just a hair more clearance in that spot and everything works as it should.

Speaking of the safety, I also got a Krebs Mk VI enhanced safety lever. Love it, I can work the lever much easier and with a my hand on the grip so it's a big improvement over the original. If you're a lefty the MKII lever might be better for you. The extended tab is behind where the lever pivots and it looks like it could be engaged with the thumb of the left hand if you shoot southpaw.

So all that's left is to pick a sling, a mount for a light I already have, and an optic and mount. I'm thinking either a small red dot like an aimpoint T1 or a hi-lux 1-4 with a BDC retical specifically for the 7.62x39mm from a 16" barrel.

Them big fox squirrels are some good eats! The little reds not so much.:)

Looks like you had a nice hunt! Congrats.

I really like mine. Traded my 10/22 a while back for a nice tube-fed Henry. It's a squirrel killer too, but the RAR is going to be my go-to tool for a while, I think.

The reds are actually pretty good - there just isn't much of them. :p

So I have this basket case of a Mossberg 500 20ga sitting around. Needs a new barrel. Midway has a 26" vent rib for $200 or big 5 has a 20 gauge combo for $309. It's almost like getting another gun for $100! How can I not?

Had a Mossy 500 20ga with a 24" barrel. Sweetest little shotty. Fast handling and could shoot it all day long. Varmits, dove, skeet, even trap. Yes trap.

My first (1949) and my last .22 rifles. The first is a Remington 514 from Xmas when I was 9 YO. The Ruger is a couple of years old. Ridiculously accurate and walnut stock. There were too many to count in between these two.

Very nice 514. I have a 512.
Lots of childhood memory with that rifle.

Next December I will have owned the 514 for 66 years. I've done a lot of plinking with it and it has spent countless days in the squirrel woods. I left it in my Mothers closet when I went in the service in 1960 to discovered it again upon her passing 25 years ago. It was not in the best of condition then, no rust but some bluing missing and scratched stock. I had it professionally bead blasted and re-blued 4 years ago, I refinished the stock.

My old eyes have difficulty focusing on rear and front sights and target simultaneously now but taking my time I can hit dime sized targets at 35 yards with it. It is a very accurate rifle.

Here is a pic inspired by the Mel McDaniel lyrics from "Louisiana Saturday Night" "A single shot rifle and a one eyed dog"

Love me that vintage stuff but I'm right at home with 22nd century tech too. Yeah, I came back 100 years to live old school with this internet thing :)

Nice story, the old rifles are good examples of " don't make em like they use to".
Yours will make a fine heirloom. My son will have mine one day. He already thinks the Remington model 7 is his. :D

Check the grain in that stock. It approaches presentation grade.... they don't make um that away anymore..... a $15 gun at the time.

Pics when you're done? Please?

Noswad, the main draw for me on the MK47 is the compatibility with AK mags. It's an AR platform that takes AK mags, which are far cheaper and more reliable than 7.62x39 AR mags. If you're out and about in a survival situation, AK mags will be relatively easy to find, and they'll work in the MK47. 7.62x39 AR mags will be impossible to find. You're stuck with what you've got.

As promised. It isn't exactly the way I wanted it, but it will have to do until I can buy an upgraded vest.

And the gauntlets

What do you guys think of the Marlin 336 in 30-30? I have been looking at them for Amanda for deer hunting.
