Yeah, no forward assist is a no go. Banging the flash hider on the sidewalk works but it ain't pretty. What do you mean by not treated? Do you mean not lined?
I was looking at the M&P and it didn't have a forward assist, didn't have a dust cover, and the specs seem to be changing without customers being kept in the loop. It also felt cheaper feeling in my hands. I realize that isn't scientific, but it was just my feelings on that rifle.
Honestly I am blissfully ignorant about all the benefits of a lined barrel, but none of my other firearms have a lined barrel.
If you could chime in that would be great bigghoss.

Agreed, unless you are shooting dirty ammo or a whole lot unlined is fine. If you are shooting dirty, corrosive ammo your going want the forward assist.Yeah, no forward assist is a no go. Banging the flash hider on the sidewalk works but it ain't pretty.
An unlined barrel isn't the end of the world in 5.56 to me-you're not going to run into corrosive ammo.
Nitrite treating is supposed to be the new thing but the Ruger doesn't have anything, chrome lined or nitrite treating. Improves barrel life and reliability and prevents corrosion. If anything else is sub-par it can be fixed pretty easy but some sort of brarrel treating is a must-have in my book. I didn't look too close at the M&P15, I have a couple AR's already and if I get any more they'll be high-end.

Not sure I'd want to drop 200 bucks unless that included all fees. That's the 7x57mm? What year? I see those crop up for 160ish on a fairly regular basis. Do you have a reasonable source of ammo for it?
are spanish mausers any good?
