What do you think about heavier bullets in wintertime Hoss. Like the Remington 158gr +P.

Honestly I don't know, I read a lot over at pistol-training.com and I'm just buying what is recommended there and checking for anomalies in my guns. I am inclined to just carry one load year-round because I am pretty sure they test through clothing and to be honest, while you want every advantage you can get, the actual projectile is only a very small part of it. That's not to say just carry any random ammo off the shelf at Walmart, but don't get too hung up on whether you have the very very bestest ammo ever made. I have even read that good wadcutters have shown acceptable performance by today's standards and a few guys are carrying them in their snubs.

While I'm thinking about it, I was shooting some TulAmmo .38 and .357 for practice and the cases were getting stuck in my revolvers. My chambers were probably dirty but I had no problems with the brass until I had been shooting a while and the guns got really dirty. I'm going to clean the guns really well and try and use the stuff up next weekend and see what happens.

one trick my dad learned from another deputy & target shooter back in the '70's - buy full length brass and cut it down to the recommended OAL for your round, then load SWC rounds upside down flush with the top of the case -- the logic was that it limited the distance the bullet traveled unsupported in the chamber before hitting the forcing cone for slightly better accuracy and hit like a true wadcutter without paying the premium for WC ammo.

For practice ammo I've been shooting the aluminum case Federal stuff in .45 and 9mm lately. It's a Smallfart exclusive I think. Clean, accurate and plenty of pop to it.

good to know.
I have a buddy who is a recent convert to the church of gaston and is trying to convince me I should be carrying a G30.

That's usually what I use for practice. The other day I tried to put some through my G17 and had numerous failures to extract resulting in double feeds. But my other two Glocks and a Ruger went through it fine so there must be something going on with the 17. Only did it with the Federal aluminum though.

I run W-W Super 158 +p's in my 442- I'd use the Remingtons if I didn't have these.
The lighter weight stuff just doesn't penetrate like 158's (or 173's...I load fairly hardcast 173's for my 1920's .38 Hand Ejector. Loaded +p for the 442 or the sp101 they are wicked).
I do carry the speer 135 short barrel as reloads in speed strips, largely because less lead rubs off in my pocket...

Went to a gun show today, didn't really see anything I wanted for a price I liked. Checked prices online for .38 snubs, Ruger LCR and S&W 642/442, and if I ordered them online they would cost me $400 out the door, shipping, transfer and everything. Most of the vendors had them for about $420 probably not including tax and transfer. Might go back tomorrow afternoon and see if anyone is willing to get me out the door for $400 after I wave a little cash in their faces.
