Beckerhead Hammock-heads?

My first real swinger outing was the summer Beckerhead Gathering, and I ... oh wait. That's a different thread. :o

My first real hammock outing was the summer Beckerhead Gathering, and I slept comfortably in my Hennessey Explorer Ultralight Zip.
I went with Hennessey because of a buy-one, get-one-free deal they ran last year.
As far as the free hammock, I was supposed to get a free Scout, but because they ran out, they upgraded my freebie to a Expedition Zip.
What I like about the Hennesseys is that you get everything you need except for stakes. Straps, bug netting, hammock, tarp.
I did upgrade and bought a larger tarp for colder/wetter weather. For packing in clear summer weather, however, the smaller tarp is fine, I think.

If you want to go off the deep end, try hammockforums.net
It's possible to hit paralysis by analysis there, however. Lots of hammock freaks. Lots of advice.

Tie off between a couple vehicles, man that oughta work.

I thought about that, but the trouble is getting 2 vehicles. lol. We have Gators, and they are real low to the ground. Our humvees are stationary due to our ATC system. Aviation is a completely different side of the Army.

A couple of years ago I put a front hitch on my tahoe. I've thought about having something fabbed up to go in each hitch so I can string a hammock right over the top.

Hmmm.....maybe one of these days...

Park two AC130s so you can tie your hammock to the barrels of the 120mm cannons. Can't be that difficult, since you're the ATC guy.

Lol, there you go completely overestimating my abilities again... I wish, but our runway ain't big enough.

OOOOOOOH!!! I loves me some hammock sleepin'. I have eyebolts hanging in my house for my hammock.

I have one made in Brazil, my amigo goes every year, and brings me back stuff.

Hammock camping is almost perfect. I say almost, because they don't work well in the cold. Think about meat hanging in a freezer. Other than that, I'm a dedicated hammock'er.

I want a Hennessy, but the money. I want a ENO Doublenest, and I will have one soon, believe that.

My usualy setup,

You'll notice the different poncho setups, in the first one, I was setup for stargazing, in the second one, we were camped right next to a river, you need that drop down cover to keep moisture out, it basically makes a nice pod.

You don't have to spend alot to get into hammock camping, but it helps if you do. You can get Asymetrical tents, that affor a flat lay, you can sleep just lik you do in your bed. I have a standard one, and it lets me sleep anyway I want.

Good luck, and after you first time out, swingin' in the breeze, watching the stars, you won't want a tent again.

Until winter.

:D

Just ordered a Grand Trunk Ultralight on Amazon. $21 for the camp model. LOTS of 5 and 4 star feedbacks on Amazon. Will order the ENO bug Guardian on friday. Saw Dave Canterburys at his school and thought it was the coldest hammock accessory ever.

I ripped the bug mesh out of my Brass of Maine hammock on saturday. Watch using nylon sleeping bags in nylon hammocks....I flipped it and went thru the mesh onto the ground head first. I was pissed. No more enclosed hammocks. The ENO bug guard is the answer. Now I need a tarp.

from the looks of the bugnet, if you flip your hammock, you're still going to fall out and land on the bugnet...

i seriously cannot imagine how one could flip a Hennessey, so deep is the incline, it's wonderful that way.

geez, what are they teaching you guys these days? :D

get some poles, lash them together six inches at one end, open, tie rope between bottom ends to limit spread; there should be a X at the top; make another set...

then you can use ground stakes, or vehicle tow points, or what have you, string the hammock over each frame X point, lash so they don't slip forwards or backwards; and hopefully your buddies don't mess with it unless they want to get shot ;)

you'll have to fiddle with stuff and all, but that's how you do it without trees, yet staying high speed, low drag ;)

if you aren't TOO large, you could even use conduit, or other handle materials like PVC pipe, or insurgents :)

Mine is an ENO Doublenest - it's nice and comfie. If you get ENO slapstraps (I wouldn't - tree huggers / whoopie slings are much better) they will stretch under load every time you use them. You can mitigate this problem by hanging the hammock a bit higher than you think you need, and sit in it for 5-10 minutes. Once they stretch, fix the sag and you should be good to go for the night. The ENO Guardian (someone mentioned) works just fine but the common complaint is that it's heavy - much heavier than a similar bug net sold by Warbonnet. If you get the ENO one, cut off that blasted bag and you will make your life a bit better.

Hammocks are necker friendly. :D

I've got the hankering for one of those War Bonnet Black Bird set ups with the double layer. Got a Kayak on the brain too.

I purchased a Warbonnet Blackbird double 1.1 with a superfly tarp and love it. In fact, my wife loves it so much that she's told me that I need to get her one too. Its easliy the best money I spent on any outdoors gear in the last two years and I sleep so comfortably I dont want to get out of the hammock in the morning.
The only thing I need to figure out is insulation for true 3 season camping/higher elevation camping. I really dont want to spend money on down UQ, so I am going to make a deal with the wife to sew me an DIY UQ.

What option did you choose for tying off to trees, Cordage or those carabiner straps?

I'll get a complete set (hammock and foldable hammock stand) on thursday, Lidl is offering the set for 50€ :D

The carabiner straps. The minimal weight gain is far exceeded by the fast and durable strap performance. It literally takes me one hand, and about 10 seconds to get the hammock set up (not including the tarp). Additionally, the straps dont seem to stretch as much as any of the cordage I've tried so far.

Hennessey Hammock here ......... I have been a tent guy for years, now I am slowly converting to the hammock ways :D

The ENO bug Guardian is like a room...its not attached to the hammock. It surrounds the hammock. You can get it, zip up, strop down, THEN get in your hammock.

My camo Grand Trunk UL should be here today. Can't wait to test it.
