Here are a few recommendations:
Get a Chris Reeve knife of some kind. Umnumzaan, Inkosi, Sebenza 21 or prior. I personally would avoid the Sebenza 31 and have. I went to a local shop dead set on buying a small 31 and couldn't talk myself into it. There was terrible vertical blade play and the pocket clip kept slipping off the frame onto the lockbar with a "pop". Both really annoying, well documented, and not acceptable for a Sebenza or any knife in this class. At the very least I'd try to handle a 31 before buying it. I ended up buying a couple more 21s after handling the 31. They can still be had for reasonable prices if you're patient so I'd grab one of those. If I could only keep one folder it would almost certainly be a Sebenza.
Hinderer has some neat stuff. I'm a fan of the Half Track but it's a smaller knife. Getting anything from them has become a real struggle though. Drops disappear almost instantly.
As someone else said, avoid Hoback. I was really excited about my Sumo then found out it's made in China. I still like the knife but I'm ashamed I paid a US-made price for it. I won't buy anything from him again. There is some really good stuff coming out of China now but it needs to be priced appropriately.
I've been really happy with my Benchmade Mini Adamas and Mini Crooked River.
Not much from Spyderco has excited my for a while and I've had some really bad experience with their customer service recently. I had super fond of the McBee and Techno 2 but both are small knives. I have a Swayback that I don't like much and don't understand the hype around it. I am planning to get a Stovepipe after I handled one but I know that's not something for everyone. I'm waiting for the factory store to get more so I can buy via the OpsFocus program at a reduced price. Otherwise, I probably won't get it.
Zero Tolerance is another one that hasn't been too exciting to me recently. I do think the 0640 was a big win. It can be difficult to find knives without flippers and/or ball bearing pivots. I prefer PB washers and thumb studs/disc so the 0640 was very appealing. Related to this, I'd avoid anything made but Emerson's EKI. I've owned many and consider them to be junk at their price point. The 0640 is an Emerson design made by a company that makes good knives. There are some great older ZT models to check out: 0550, 0200, 0900, 0620/0630 to name a few.
A few photos of some of my favorite stuff.
My job limits blades to below 2.5" so I have a lot of small knives to rotate there. The McBee (top) and ZT 0022 are nice.
Sebenza, Half Track, & Mini Adamas
Benchmade Mini Crooked Rivers on top
These are all excellent Emerson designs made by ZT.
Spartan is ok (top) but I'm not as impressed with them as others seem to be.
Half Tracks again, top two
This is most of my CRK folder collection. When I say that I couldn't talk myself into buying a Sebenza 31 it was really pretty shocking to me. It obviously didn't take much to get me to buy a CRK.
This is another one I bought after handling the Sebenza 31. I went really old school to cleanse my palate.
Hoback Sumo…such a neat knife but should have been about $250 less since it’s made in China.
