I just got home from a south GA hog hunt today, didn't kill any hogs, weather was kinda crazy, but had a real good time anyway. I did put my shotgun to some use and killed a couple of messes of grey squirrels and enjoyed being in my favorite place in the world, South GA swamps. Since this is a blade forum the only knife I really used was a vic trekker, which worked great as always, peeled potatos, cut meat and cleaned a dozen or so squirrels and will still cut the hair on the back of your hand. Anyway, here are a couple of pics.

My favorite hunting grounds.

Who says you can't cook biscuits without an oven, a good skillet, some tinfoil and a hot fire and your in business.

Home sweet home, BTW the fire wood was cut with a 14" Poulan, sorry, no knife or hatchet

A big ass spider that didn't focus, but yall can get the idea.

Anyway it was a fantastic trip and I hated to leave, I wish the game would have cooperated a bit more though. We did have a doe try to sit in our lap, she walked within 6ft of me sitting on the ground but it wasn't either sex so she didn't go in the cooler, we saw tons of wood ducks but no hogs. Hope you enjoy the pics. Chris

Nice pics! When you gonna go back and get us a hog to look at? We want to see your knife at work.:D;)

Looks like a great place to be! (Except for that big ass spider, gahhhh!)

In Febuary, this is the first time in a LOOONG time I have been skunked. I am going back deer hunting this weekend, maybe some pics from that.

This year there were more acorns than I have ever seen in 30 years of hunting and I don't think that game was moving around much at all, they didn't have too. It also didn't help that it was 90 degrees the first day we were there, there were alligators out sunning in December, then a front blew in and it stormed like hell and the next night it was 29. I know about excuses but with all the mast and crazy weather it was really tough hunting. Chris

Thanks for the pics.
Hasn't the weather down here been just incredible for December???
Nice on heating costs, but not very Christmas-like....

And still no rain.
You can practically walk across the Catawba River.:(

Yeah Allen, it's the same here, we are going to be in some dire straits if we don't get some rain. Chris

Chris -

I've never made biscuits in a skillet. I'll have to try that! Recipe/tips?

Chris

Does your camera have a macro setting? If it does, that will help with the close up shots of bugs, flowers, etc. Unless you have an SLR, then your probably need a macro lens.

BTW: Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Too bad about the hogs:mad:

we cannot do such things down here in Italy...
at least it's difficult to find a place where to camp in the woods

but we did boat camping, no fire, not permitted...

I would really like to tell you that you make dough by mixing flour and buttermilk, shortening, and a pinch of soda but I can't, cause that biscuit dough came out of the frozen food section at Food Lion. :p

As for baking them in a skillet, take your biscuit dough, however you get it,;) put it into a greased cast iron skillet and coat each biscuit in oil, then build a reflector on one side of the pan out of doubled tin foil on the side of the skillet with the biscuits under it. Prop the pan up on a rock facing the fire, the way I adjust the heat is to put the pan far enough back where I can hold my hand for 10 or 15 seconds before it gets so hot I have to move it, you can always adjust by sliding the pan forward or back, bake until they are as brown as you want them. You can do cornbread the same way, a lot of people use a dutch oven which works but I like to see the bread as it is baking so I can adjust the heat and know when it is just right.

Give it a try and experiment, with a little practice you can bake perfect bread. Chris

A cup of flour, half cup of milk and four tablespoons of oil. Beat together and drop with a spoon into skillet.

I can make scratch biscuits that will make your tongue beat up your lips to get to them, but if you haven't tried frozen biscuits give them a whirl. They are a lot better than canned and way easier to make than scratch made. Chris
