Hello, I´m an extreme beginner into knives and this Forum. For the present time, I only own two "quality" knives; a ruby red Victorinox VN53231 ManagerII and a Fiskars Chef´s knife.
Planning to buy a knew pocket knife that is kind of "woman-friendly" but somewhat larger than my ManagerII. The knife should have some type of blade lock and not to be larger than approximately 3" of blade length. Any suggestions?

PS Not too expensive! (under $100)

Welcome to the forums, Pia!:)
A good place to start would be a Spyderco Delica or Calypso Jr. ltwt.
I'm sure you will get a lot of other suggestions, too.

i know everyone is tired of hearing it but here we go again lol - go to www.newgraham.com , and click on retired benchmades, and get ya a BM AFCK (advanced folding combat knife) for between about $60 and $85 depending on the blade, coating, steel, etc - a bud just got a plain black M2 blade for about $85, and i dont think you will find a better knife around for that kinda $$ imho - i really really dont - thats a lot of knife for $85, and the only reason they retired them is because they couldnt put a round hole 'ala spyderco on them anymore - i would RATHER have a old AFCK vs the AFCK11 anyday - and i am in no way associated w/new graham, wish i was 3 buds have gotten AFCK's from them in the last month - try one you will not be sorry.....

Welcome Pia...take your time, save up your money, stay tuned here, and have fun!

Hi Pia,

So near and yet so far... Welcome to the forums - not many scandinavians here. I'll second the M2 mini AFCK, a great using knife at almost any price. Also check out Columbia River (CRKT) all of whose products are a great value. The Navajo, for instance, is a very handy and sturdy knife, somewhat overlooked I think.

Welcome to the forums Pia!

You might also want to check out the Benchmade 705. It's at your upper price limit, but worth the money.

There is also a whole bunch of small Spydercos. Just check out their homepage.

Also EKA makes some nice folders with wooden handles. They should be cheap were you come from.

Hello Pia!

I'd suggest Spyderco Calypso jr but with micarta handles. It is discontinued model but still available. It cuts extremely well, looks better than models suggested above, has Spyderco opening hole, has easy to use reliable back lock and blade is 7 cm long. Its blade wont keep the edge as long as light weight models (weight difference is only 10 g) VG-10 steel but Aus-8 blade keeps better edge than Victorinox and is easy to sharpen.

You should be able to find one through netdealers for about 60$ + shipping. Ask your fellow Swedes about ordering knives to Swden. If you still are concerned about ordering knives from net I think that there might be some available in Sweden as there are at least two in Helsinki region for about 850 SEK.

First of all, welcome aboard.I think that you will like the Spyderco Calypso Jr. or Calypso Jr. Lightweight. Great quality at a great price.

Welcome, Pia. I'll second the Spydie Calypso Jr., but with the VG-10 blade. Reasonably priced and well suited to small to medium sized hands. Boker also makes some nice smaller folders and they should be readily available in Scandanavia, at least they were the last time I was over there.

That is a SOG knife, brand spanking new out! It has a great lock, 2 inch blade and the suggested retail price is $40 US. Sweet little knife. By the way, the steel it is made of (AUS-8) takes a great edge and although it doesn't hold an edge as long as some of the other knives suggested to you here (like an AFCK) it is much easier to sharpen. Definitely a newbie knife knut friendly, and woman friendly knife.

Here's what I bought my girlfriend (sorry, it is only a link:)

Spyderco Ladybug

The ladybug is a relatively small knife. It was my girlfriend't first knife and I wanted something small so tha she'd actually carry and use it, which she does.

As you already have a Victorinox knife, you probably have something in this size already, so check out the Sculptura for sure.

Welcome Pia! I'll throw in my recommendation for almost anything Spyderco! Delica, Calypso Jr., or my current favorite, the Native. All have around 3" or less long blades. I think the Native handles a bit better and it has a spear point blade. Like the Delica, you can switch the clip to either side for tip up carry.

The BenchMade AFCKs are also nice, but have "linerlocks" as opposed to the "lockbacks" I mentioned above. Check your local laws to make sure you aren't breaking any blade length limits. I think the mini AFCKs have slightly over 3" blades.

Enjoy!

Karl

I agree with just about anything spyderco. My favorite is the Tim Wegner designed Mouse. It's in your price range, and is a very classy little folder (lockback) that cuts like a bigger knife. Pete

Welcome to the forums PIA.

I have reviewed all recommmendations you have received thus far and I don't think you can go wrong following any of the suggestions you have received. I would add you should consider the purpose for which you want a knife, that is, what chores is the knife to perform for you. Then consider how you wish to carry the knife. Will it be worn on your belt? Clipped to your jeans pocket? Concealed? In your purse? Then just pick a knife that fits your needs and your hand comfortably, has a good reputation for quality, a solid lock and dive right in.

Good luck with your choice.

The Spyderco Native Lightweight often comes up in these discussions as one of the best values going. It is the only knife in that price class with a blade of 440V. Nothing holds an edge better.

welcome pia its good to see another female at bfc great bunch of guys here (most of the time) wanna see some great knives even if a lil pricey go to hermanknives.com cant afford em myself right now but some day:rolleyes:

Yeah, I'd like one of Tim Herman's Wall Street Tacticals (think thats the model name), and a TacBabe to go with it. Not sure which would cost more:p

Another vote for the Spyderco Calypso Jr. lightweight. Well within the budget, and it's got both high-performance steel and blade grind going for it, as well as good ergonomics. Not a "heavy-duty" knife by any means, though.
You might find a Spyderco Lum Chinese for around $100 on the for sale forums, but I'm not sure.
The BM 705 is another good suggestion. Doesn't have the cutting performance of the full flat ground Spydercos, but is a much stronger, more durable blade and overall package, not to mention the Axis lock.
