Behold...The Framelock Commander Conversion...

How are you going about "darkening" the handle slabs??? I'm actually thinking about sending mine off to Bodycote for a coat of boron carbide!!!

While EKI knives aren't exactly my cup of tea. That is one hell of a knife. I'd never carry it for fear of losing it. I'm guessing that cost a pretty penny!

its going to have a purple adonize on the handle covered by a polish that will change it to dark green.

A lot of promising news coming out with that coating Squid. It all looks good. Wonder how much it would be to have a knife done by Darrel???

I've modified my order.

Now its going to be the CF inlay frame with only the exposed part that sticks outside of the pocket darkened. the rest will be unsealed TI.

I just got mine yesterday afternoon and like it alot!

I've scanned a few pictures of it, but my photohosting service (Webshots) is for some demented reason not allowing direct image linking, so you'll have to go to my ALBUM to see them.

In any case, first off, note the bluish-gray color of the handle slabs. Like memnoch, I was told that anodizing the titanium in purple and then coating with wax would yield an OD green color - sure doesn't like OD green to me, how about you? :)

In any case, I'm not sure if I like the color as it is right now. Am currently debating whether or not to send it back to him to be reanodized in a midnight blue color or to send it off to BodyCote for their boron carbide plating. What do you folks think?

I like it. BC1 would be cool, but I really like the color the way it is, better than plain old black.
Would you compare the lockup between the conversion and the Sebenza (see you've got one)?
Been thinking about it, and this may be the way to go, after all. Looks like my ideal knife.

The lockup is nice and solid but I think the Sebenza's lockup feels more "refined". IMHO this is because of two main reasons:
  1. The finer finish CRK puts on the Sebenza blades, especially at the locking surface. Considering the street price of a Sebbie is roughly double that of a Commander, this higher level of finishing shouldn't be surprising, it should be expected! :)
  2. The relatively small diameter and relatively thickness of the Nylatron washers used. In comparison, the metal (bronze phosphor?) washers that CRK uses in the Sebenzas are thinner and larger diameter, making for an even more smooth and solid "feel"

Now, after have said this, I must say for the record that these comments should not be construed as criticisms against the knife or Mr. Weiland's craftsmanship. I love the knife and the work is definitely top-notch. I just think he was limited to a certain degree what he could do because of the nature of the project - making custom handles for a production knife blade.

Thank you for putting that into perspective.
I had hoped he would be able to use larger OD washers, using only one detent, but as long as the lockup is positive, that is a small matter, and I still want one!
Looks like I'll be getting another satin (chrome) Commander before long...still kicking myself for selling the other one:(

I'm researching my first Emerson and I thought I'd post with the new link for the picture:

That one is MINE...and unless you have britney spears, you can't have it.

If you can get me titney for a weekend, its yours.

Till then, its sitting in my pants.

I've seen this pic before, but I've no qualms repeating my statement that this is one fine conversion by Reese. I bought on the secondary market a Weiland frame lock that had a recently refurbished handle, but quite a worn blade. I replaced it with a mint 2000 satin serrated and ended up with one cool Commander, sans the carbon fiber inlay. I'd like to get a piece retrofitted to mine - or perhaps another material - to dress it up.

I'm waiting to see when that first frame lock Super Commander surfaces. A pretty penny, but I'd like to see that first one dressed up a bit...;)

Aw...My wife said I can't have Britney. Something along the lines of "If you even think you have a chance...Go for it! (insert evil grin here);)
Anyway, The Framelock Commander is still going to look great 30 years from now. Can't say the same for Britney.
