Behold...the MEGA-SMATCHET!!!

Awesome! I really enjoy your projects!

Does it come in Damascus?

I would need a WAY better forge for that. :D
A power hammer would probably help too...or a helper with a sledgehammer who doesn't mind repetitive stress injuries. ;)

Absolutely awesome Stabby!!
Love the pics!!
That bad boy will eat your
Medford for Brunch
!!!:p
Joe

And will still have an appetite!

"Some pills fell out of the handle of some guy's smatchet and I ate them..." :D

Outstanding project, Mark. :thumbsup::cool:

This is the next day, after the piece had overnight to cool down. It was still sort of warm all those hours later though.

It also had melted the vermiculite onto itself, creating a very, VERY abrasion resistant skin that had to be removed:

It is ready...

I decided on a lanyard hole for a change:

And then, what the annealing was really all for...drilling a hollow handle into it!!!

Sadly, the melted vermiculite skin made for squealing on the drilling of the lanyard hole when I went up in drill diameter, so I figured I needed to work my way up the drill sizes for the vertical drilling.

Unfortunately, the set-up was rickety due to no angle plate, and the drill-press travel height being less than the length of the Mega-Smatchet.
Sooooo...the fist cobalt drill bit snapped.

It took an hour and a half, and a LOT of drill bits, but I got past it...and it turned out that the annealing had gone perfectly. I should have just started with a larger drill bit...

Time to tap that hole:

Here it is as work progresses in the following days:

Time for Heat treat!

I took it to the techno-wizards at McLearie and Sons Heat treating, that they might imbue the might of the Machine God upon it:

Machine God? Looks more like it was imbued with a bit of Gork himself, or maybe it was Mork.

The Machine God can produce items just as brutal. :D
Too orderly inside the shop for Orks.

They have some pretty impressive equipment going on in there.

I always thought Victorinox was the answer to every knife related question, but this works too:D

I personally would rather have a V44 over a smatchet, but blade shape is probably the only real difference between the two.

Stabman, I believe it is time. You have achieved true knife enlightenment. The only thing left for you is to ascend to Buddha-hood.

I think I'll stick around on this plane of existence for a while longer yet. ;)

I had a Victorinox Swisschamp in the backpack on the woods outing...so I guess perhaps there are two answers to every knife-related question.

Are you taking orders?

Not yet...but I am planning on doing a run of Smashblade.
Design is almost fully dialed in; funds for steel and handle material will be the next goal.

A variant of the Mega-Smatchet could be a great idea too. :)
I have a few ideas on how to get it closer to 2 pounds, while still being insanely strong.

I figure a timetable of around a year is not impossible...seems to be a goal to shoot for.

1. In the last pic of post #3, it didn't baton that "stump" all the way to the ground. -1
2. A real smatchet would have destroyed the cutting board under the onions and damaged the countertop too. -1

8/10
