belt carry for something to boil water in?

I've been putting together a PSK to keep on my hiking belt and I've been trying to figure out the best thing to boil water in that could also be strapped to my belt. I'd prefer something solid rather than something flimsy like folded tinfoil or the foil bread pans folded down. Is the GI metal canteen cup or the nalgene nester's cup the only other option? I have katadyn tabs in my survival pouch as well, but I figure it'd be prudent to have something I could boil water/food in.

Thanks!

You can get smaller cups, if the nalgene one and the canteen one are too big. That's about all I can think of.

How about getting a small S/steel MSR bowl or even one designed for small dogs from the pet store and putting a small hole in to accept a carabinna !

When I was in scouting, sierra cups were all the rage. The wire handle hooks nicely over a scout web belt. Not much for volume, but portable and rugged. Campmoor, REI, etc. have them. You can get them in 8 oz. and 12 oz sizes

Back in the day, (before I majored in Immunology!) when we still drank out of a flowing stream without a second thought, we all carried "Sierra" cups (with a curved handle to hook onto things easily) dangling close at hand from our packs or belt. When walking by water, we would just dip in and take a drink. These are however kind of small for boiling.

For boiling water, I prefer vessels that are tall and narrow and has a lid, vs flat and wide. What I carry now is the ultralight titanium MSR Titan Kettle (0.85 L). To big for belt carry though....

The pot is the smaller one from a swedish mess kit I picked up for just a few bucks. It'll boil 2 cups of water quite nicely. It packs up real well.

Please ignore the pictured contents of the kit. I've tweeked it quite a bit with suggestions from this forum. I'll try to get a new one posted soon.

Thanks everyone! Looks like the canteen and cup are going to be my best bet (thanks hd), I just thought perhaps something better had came out since those things were standard. That swedish mess tin that CSshepherd has in his kit (thx for the pic!) looks like it'd work too, i've been thinking about using a mag pouch to hold everything (right now using maxpedition M-1), seems like it'd be more worth it to stick with the canteen and cup though. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions! :)

another option (though not really kit sized) would be to get a stainless bottle that you can stick right in the fire. a kleen kanteen or a guyot/nalgene would work well, and you could use it to carry water. large capacity too.

yeah, i have a sigg for normal use and have been thinking about getting a kleen kanteen for the belt. The siggs have a liner inside and I don't think heating it would be good. I just found an article at the other site that can't be named on the guyot bottles. They actually look perfect, might look into that; I could boil more water at a time and pour it into a backup container for storage if I need to. If not, regular GI canteen and accompanying cup it is.

Did a little more looking around, looks like it comes down to the following:

32 oz Guyot Stainless Steel Bottle
GSI stainless cup
Maxpedition 10"x4" bottle holder (or any cheaper 1L nalgene bottle holder)

or

Standard GI canteen
GI stainless cup
GI canteen cover

Though it'd be nice to have the 32 oz guyot to boil more water in or cook in, the GI standard setup calls to my starving wallet.... Still looking at mess tin sets some of you suggested. they might work too, i don't know; the GI canteen deal seems like the least bulkiest choice for belt carry.

Sierra cup! SS, cheap (like 4 bucks) , bomber construction, makes a dandy digging scoop, pot, bowl, plate, cup, neck knife holder or hat (:D)

You could use oven bags and just a regular old canteen.

Oven bags will withstand the heat of fire and won't melt, the regular canteen will carry your water.
I know you said you wanted to stay away from flimsy stuff.
But if you think about it, oven bags can be used for a lot more than just boiling water (transpiration bags, solar stills, veg bags...).

If your heart is set on something rigid and you don't want a Nalgene you could give the Guyot bottles a look see.

If it were me I'd just opt for the oven bags and plastic bottle. The bags take up less space, have virtually no weight and multiple uses IMHO.

HTH,

Shawn

ETA: They're what I use in my kits and they've never failed me. I reccomend them to all my classes. Something else you might want to consider (if you have enough room) a couple of those large heavy duty bright orange lawn trashbags...
Other than that...looks like a helluva kit!!

Do the Standard Guyot (38 oz), not the 32 or it will rattle around the bottom of the cup because it is tapered. The Standard is the same exact size as a Nalgene. Here is my set-up

The smaller size MSR stowaway pots and its clones will fit in a GI canteen cover with room to spare. Mine (a cheap clone) will fit in a small fann pack as well.
