I have put together a small belt kit in a Maxpedition M2 pouch tell me what you think and give me some suggestions.
1. survival reference cards
2. pencil and paper
3. 2 mylar space blankets
4. DMT coarse sharpener
5. disposeable lighter
6. 30' 550 cord
7. Leatherman Wave
8. wax paper tinder
9.signal mirror
10. Fresnal lens
11. water storage bag
12. Inova led flashlight
13. small tackle box: hooks, sinker, swivels, bobbers
14. Altoid tin: snare wire, 80lb test spiderwire,tinder, candles, small knife
15. Ferrocium steel
16. water purification tabs
17. small box of matches
18. CRKT M18 knife
19. small compass
20. Rolaids, Prilosec
21. Immodium, Benadryl, Tylenol
22. Carmex
Any suggestions? Not much more room so maybe more tinder? Matches?

Perhaps the kitchen sink? I think that's a complete kit you have there. I'd add a rifle :D

The M2 is the medium.

Looks good. Only minor suggestions:

8. wax paper tinder
I would swap this with a film cap full of Vaseline soaked cotton balls, more fires.

18. CRKT M18 knife
I would sub with a small fixed. Perhaps a Howling Rat? Less parts is a + IMO. Perhaps a BK11 so you can lash it to a shaft in a pinch.

19. small compass
Make sure it's a good one and couple it with a good topo of the area.

In my personal kit I put a few of those Powerbait eggs in a miniature plastic bag. And stick it in my “tin”.

Lastly, how about a loud whistle to add to your signaling group?

- Heavy duty trash bag.

- Sewing kit (needles, thread, safety pins).

- Duct tape.

- Bug repellent.

- Sun Screen.

- Lip balm.

- Sunglasses.

- Packet of tissues.

I would also trade the M18 for an Arclite.

Nic waxpaper takes up less space than a film cannister, but Carmax if flammable so some extra cotton balls might work. I carry the CRKT Falcob in the kit now, I also have a larger fixed blade on the belt or in whatever I'm carrying the belt kit in. I made this belt kit to carry in case I got seperated from my BOB, which is a much larger kit.
Nic I haven't forgotten about you either I've just been real busy with family committments lately. Where do you find Powerbait eggs?

I agree with Nic on the addition of a fixed blade. But then again, I am not sure how small the pouch actually is. I think that a small fixed blade could be lashed to the outside of the pouch if you go in that direction.

Hey there,

Here's what I'm coming up with, based on experience and long debates... ;)

- Large knife / machete, on the belt or on the pack (9" + blade, full flat grind, with saw on the back) AND/OR portable saw (SAK, Multitool, etc.);
- Smaller knife/folder (4" or so);
- Camelbak (or other bladder hydration system) filled with 2-3 liters of water;
- Fire: a Bic plus spark-based (Strike Force or alike) firestarter;
- 1 candle;
- Cotton balls + vaseline in a film canister
- 1 thick space blanket (cheap Mylar ones are too fragile, get a real thick one);
- 5'x5' clear plastic sheet (for water still);
- A few thick, large garbage bags (preferably orange, for signaling)
- Nalgene bottle with large opening (will be used to store most of the stuff, collect water, etc.);
- 6' elastic, flexible tube (to get water from the still without removing the plastic each time, and to use as a slingshot);
- Monofilament (50+ lbs test): 1 roll;
- Some hooks, jiggers and lures
- Paracord 550 (50-60');
- LED headlamp (Petzl Tikka or alike, with new cells);
- Clean, uncolored bandana (for wounds, etc.);
- Small iodine bottle (for wounds/water treatment);
- A little bit of high energy food;
- Compass (Sylva or alike, with mirror);
- Recent topographic map of the region ;
- Signaling whistle ;

Cheers,

David

You guys carry more stuff for survival than what I use at home... :D

LOL

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone that told you to lose the Columbia River. Almost any decent fixed blade would be a tremendous improvement. ( A BlackJack Trailguide or 1-7 would be my top two choices)Thanks!

This is a belt kit, I do have a large fixed blade to go with this kit. I also have a larger BOB that is more extensive. The kit is for if I have to be away from my BOB for awhile. The CRKT is a back up to the large fixed blade which will more than likely be on the same belt as the kit.

I have experienced the total failure of the lock on a CRKT folder. If you want a dynamite folder at a great price, look at a Spyderco Delica or Endura in VG-10. They are scary sharp, and have bullet proof locks.
If you are on a budget, Cold Steel's Trailguide is a great knife at a very attractive price.
I'd even take an Opinel over a CRKT.

No problem I have a Lonewolf Harsey Tactical Folder that I carry also. What exactly failed on the CRKT? Was it a newer one with the lawks system? I've had several and never had a problem with one.

Don't know how to post pics here. They can be seen at Crowstacticaloutfitters.com I'm not sure if it is the M1 or M2 either way it's the larger of the 2. Believe me this thing is FULL.

A lot of good suggestions here. I don't really know how much room you have left, I'm going to assume not much...

One of the things that have proven their worth to me and don't take up much room....zip ties. Four of them can help you make basic frames for shelter or a reflector for fires and such....quicker than floss when time is expensive.

Carry as many as you can in various sizes...remember some are stronger than others.

Nice kit, btw.:)
