Just kill me and get it over with already. Why does it always happen near the end of the grind?

What do you mean by belt rash? Anyway s%#t happens almost always at the end of the grind LOL :)

Did you run up and over the plunge cut or up onto the flat above the edge bevel. Or another possibility is a 2" mark from the plunge from the edge of the belt.

Belt rash? That's like road rash (motorcycle, bicycle, skateboard, etc) - bad skin rash! Perhaps a photo would be too gross for us faint hearted folks {g}

I'm guessing I used the wrong terminology. This one is too deep to grind out.

2 inch belt bump. Caused by hitting the plunge line too hard. That tips the knife into the other side of the belt. Shorten the height and regrind.

I win I called it, 2" gouge.

One thing to always remember, there is no such thing as a ruined knife, just a smaller one.

That can be fixed. Just take your time and make careful passes without a lot of pressure. The grind may have to go a smidge higher but it can be saved.

Just take the grind higher. You will have to go back to a lower grit belt but can fix it. Just make it a full flat.

From the pic, it doesn't look too deep. Just take your grind all the way to the spine, and be mindful when hitting the plunge. Don't tilt your blade, keep it flat on the belt, and you'll likely be able to save it.

The way to avoid a 2" line is not to stop and hold the blade at the plunge. Slide it up to the plunge and then away from it and off the belt. If you try and lift it from the plunge you will almost always make a 2" mark.

Thanks for the advice. It's actually quite deep and unrecoverable. If I had a surface grinder I would have continued until it was gone and flattened out the tang. Lesson learned and my wife gets a lime cutter.

Or you can send it to me and I'll finish it with a bit less blade width/height.
