The way to avoid a 2" line is not to stop and hold the blade at the plunge. Slide it up to the plunge and then away from it and off the belt. If you try and lift it from the plunge you will almost always make a 2" mark.

Stacy gave the correct answer! Unfinalized passes will gouge, you should always clear the belt with the point, at the plunge you are compelled to stop, and that's a no-no.
No matter how you try to lift the blade from the plunge, when you stop the belt digs, even if you don't tilt the blade; so it is necessary to bounce back to the point to blend everything and then lift.
