Belt sanding (finally!)

OK, what would be the advantage of a 1x42 belt sander instead?

Longer belts mean less heat build up, the belts last longer. There may be more.

On the Delta vs Harbor Freight:

Delta has two models I looked at, a 1/4 hp and a 1/3. The 1/3 is about 100 bucks. HF is 1/3 and costs 29. I can sneak a 29 dollar tool into this house, I can't fake a 100 bucks.

But both Delta's have sanding disks. I work with small things- like pistol grips, and this seems like it would be real useful. Course, I can always do what I do today; put my Sears hand held belt sander on it's back and use it.

I'm sorely tempted to get the little Harbor Freight. I'm afraid if I look too closely at the Delta I'll see a made in China sticker on the motor anyway.

The Delta probably is more user friendly.

Help!
Someone please read this post and issue an arbitrary and capricious opinion! Or not. Even a thoughtful reply.

The little Chinese unit weighs 13 pounds. The big Delta 60. That's kind of scary right there. I'd have to bolt the little HF model down.

will someone please stop me from spending a 100 dollars and further setting me back from my quest for a Ruger 480!! ??? That's how much the Delta is.

Whenever I buy a cheap tool to save money, it seems I end up giving it away and buying the expensive one I wanted to begin with. Only now it costs even more, counting the first tool. :grumpy:
.480 Ruger? Does it have to be mounted in the bed of a truck? :D The bad guys in your town must be REAL bad.

I'd get the Delta and then convince the bad guys to come to the workshop/garage and hold their widdle fingers to the belt in motion until they gave up.

I love my Delta!

Mostly because I can't afford a Grizzly.

But also because it works well...especially the disk sander.

.

The bad guys can be deterred at this minute by any one of four 41's, a 44, a 45 Colt revolver or lever, 45/70, 308, 38/55, 3006, 35 Whelen, and a few small fry like the 32/20, 32 mag, and 38 Special.

If only the Delta played CD's too...a kind of sanding boombox.

A 'TruckLoad of Sales" passed by my area two weeks ago. I wonder how cheap the Delta was there? Course, last time I bought anything from them it took me three days to scrape the painted rust off. I think my vise went down in the Indian Ocean on it's way from China.

For those of you not familiar with truckload sales, in rural areas or places without Harbor Freight, a Semi Truck shows up at the local VFW for a Saturday, before heading to the next stop.

I just missed one while I was travelling...they had some great prices and Rustoleum is cheap.

.

How about those 4" by 36" belt sanders by Delta? I saw one for 109.

munk

1" for sharpening...2" if you are Yvsa or Dan

.

:D

Munk - welcome to the Dark Side....there is no turning back....:D

Don't forget - the Delta model comes with a disc sander that is very useful for squaring up wood pieces, etc.

You can buy a leather belt for it and power-strop your edges. You can get a felt belt and restore the mirror polish on the khukuris that have seen field duty.

It doesn't look like a multi-function tool....but it really is. ;)

Dan,

Do you own this Delta they are discussing?

Where does Nasty come in saying two inch?

You know, a four inch would be good for wood working- Nasty told me that- and I do like that. But then I looked at my little 2.5" pocket knife and realised a 1" is better for small and intricate tasks.

And though I want to make furniture some day, the only things I've really made over the years are revolver grips.

Dan has a 1" Delta *and* a 2" Grizzly. Knows how to use them both too.

I still need to get a felt belt...:(

.

Unless I'm mistaken, the belt grinder is over 1000 bucks.

That sort of makes me feel better about a 100 Delta belt sander.

The very first thing you make is something your wife has wanted for the house.

You are not mistaken about the $100 belt grinder.

I'm here for the jokes, the knifes, and the talk not to deter anyone!

You can get the Grizz for $413.00 to your door!!!! :D  :D
110 pounds of Grizz Grinding Fury!!!!  :D :p

You'll need one of the Grizzly tables to set it on as well, $44.50 and a bargain at the price!!!! :D

I have been known to split a 2" X 72" belt in half lengthwise for sharpening ease in hard to profile areas.
And a 1" belt grinder would be really great for more delicate work.
Wish I had one for sharpening as they also run slower.
