Benchmade 551-1701 Griptilian DLT Trading Exlcusive

...and furthermore....

With 5 in hand--all with aftermarket scales--plus J's new one here, 'twould seem there are enough Grips in the house. Of course the one blade I'm missing is the 551 style in satin plain-edge and I don't have any CF Grips and DLT is great to do business with and I need another knife on my wish list like I need another hole in my head, but the -1701 is a sweet one....

Thanks for nuthin', BMK and DLT. :p

After a USPS delay, it arrived today. Very handsome piece. I don't have quite the keen eye that some other forumites possess, but I must say it appears flawless to me. Perfectly smooth out-of-the-box free-dropping action. It is much thicker than I had anticipated; serious carbon fiber slabs. feels like a real Griptilian. After a few quick cellphone pics, it went straight in the pocket and that is where it will stay for the weekend.

How do you guys find that carbon fiber wears as a handle material. Does it look good with wear on it?

I picked up a 551-1701 this past week. Fantastic knife. This is my first griptilian and I couldn't be happier. Also, major props for DLT. I ordered the knife on Wednesday evening, it shipped on Thursday, and I and received it in Texas on Saturday.

I've always liked my old nylon handled Griptillian, & I like the M390, so I got one of these this week. The fit & finish is great, the blade is centered, & it drops open easily. I like the cf handle design. My one complaint about the knife, and it may just be me, is the handle is a bit slippery. Maybe milling another set of three grooves farther back on the handle would've given it better grip.

Does the CF on your 908 have the same finish or is it different? Specifically, my CF 908 feels like it has some sort of micro traction. Does the CF scales on the Grip have the same texture/feeling?

I checked them out side by side and the Stryker has slightly more texture. Problem is, I don’t know if that is due to having been carried for longer and worn in. I can say that the Griptilian is not overly smooth like laminates. It just feels like carbon fiber. Sorry I can’t help out more than that. I tried.

Doe anyone have a 940-1 and a 551-1701? Wold be great to see some comparison photos around the CF on these two knives

I really like the look and feel of the CF on the 940-1

Thx

As I predicted, I weakened and ordered one on Saturday. I agree that a mini version would be great!

I forgot to ask for an inspection in the order instructions, so I just called and left a message requesting one. I feel confident DLT will take care of me if I'm not happy.

I recently got the Knifeworks exclusive Grip and it is awesome. Lots of great Benchmades coming out lately!

I ordered mine on Friday evening and it arrived today (Monday). That's just nothing short of spectacular as far as I'm concerned. I'd have been happy receiving it by Wednesday.

I ordered the black coated blade model and couldn't be happier. DLT and Benchmade score a grand slam on this exclusive.

Well I received mine today and it's very nice, smooth and very well done. Super solid and ff is great! I also had a super awesome fathers day surprise and my two boys got me a rift! I never get knives for gifts other than for myself. Never would have considered it but I really dig it especially being its from my kids. Still can't believe my tight wod wife bought a 170 dollar knife for my kids to gift me! Lol.

Just got it unboxed and it is fantastic! This is my first carbon fiber handled knife and the scales feel very nice. Great action and no fit and finish issues to speak of. Very nice action on this knife.

One thing that I didn't notice about it when I ordered is that it doesn't have a lanyard hole. I kind of wanted it to have one, but I think I'm gonna be ok without it.

Sorry in advance for the lack of pics. I'm gonna learn someday.

Just wanna say, I gave in and got one if these. Wow, I absolutely love it. I have to say, out of my 100+ collection of knives this has to be my favorite. I love holding it and flipping it. It is well balanced and great to grip. The only thing that would make it better is offering it with the sheepsfoot blade with hole opener. Man....

I received mine today. I did ask DLT to inspect prior to shipping, and they sent me a good one. Fit and finish is great, the blade is ground evenly, and there is no blade play to be found.

If I had to complain about anything, it's that the blade is ever so slightly off-centre, and there are a few pockmarks in the carbon around the edges of the scales (which I understand is quite normal for carbon).

Has anyone else noticed that the blade has a very subtle stone wash finish? It's not mentioned anywhere that I can find.

Also count me as another who'd be interested in a Mini Griptilian version.

So, how is this holding up? I'm considering this and am interested in knowing how you all like it after owning it for a few months.

While I still really like mine, it hasn't seen a whole lot of pocket time.
Been carrying the Bugout or a Delica a lot lately, as I find myself gravitating toward knives that don't take up as much room in the pocket as the Grip. I also like the black paper micarta scales on the Knifeworks version a bit better.

I love carrying mine and it gets 50/50 pocket time split with my XM-18. Mine came centered, but has become ever so slightly off center. I also agree that the scales can be a bit slippery. Other than those small issues this is an outstanding knife.

Late response, just saw the question. I’ve taken it camping a couple times and used it at work for a few weeks when I got it. Has stood up great as expected. The smoother surface of the handle is easy on pockets, which I like with certain clothing. Nothing out of ordinary to report.

Hi jazub - Looks like I'm late to the party but fortunately the 551-1701 is still available. Thanks for posting your helpful comparison photos of the 551-1701 Grip vs 908BK-1501 Stryker. Question - after this much time has passed have you developed a preference for one over the other? Trying to decide on a purchase and leaning a little towards the Stryker for the M4. But that M390 is awfully tempting. Thanks much in advance for your input.

Hi Mako, sorry for delayed response. Both cool folders but the Stryker is my favorite folder in that size/weight range. I carry a 490 or a 940 most days though.

Share pics when you decide.
