Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian in M390, S30V, D2, or 154CM

My M390 Mini Grip came UPS Friday. Workmanship was excellent but edge is not very good. Tiny bevel and not a very good slicer or cutter. I am not sure I want to try and fix this edge. Who here could sharpen this knife that someone could recommend? Benchmade needs to do some real work on the sharpening of there knives. The last couple of years all my new BM have had crappy edge. Are you listening Benchmade?

You won't regret it.:)

Will the 556 do well for food preparation? Is it easy to clean; inner handle, mechanism, etc..

Can it easily be disassembled and assembled?

If you disassemble it, you will void your warranty. Also, I wouldnt really say that its easy to clean, but I would say that about any knife with nested liners.

You could probably rinse it out and let it dry if you have stainless steel though. I just blow compressed air through mine every now and then, but they really only get pocket lint in them.

Does it need any proprietary tool from Benchmade to disassemble? or will I be able to find the tool i need for it at my local hardware store?

Speaking of Sharp...whats the best way to sharpen this bad boy? I have DMT Dia-fold kit and believe it would do a great job because of the diamond folds. But what is the angle to use?

#77 just arrived in my mailbox this afternoon (along with my new paramiltary 2 :) )

Edge is perfectly centered and very sharp. The tip is a little dill compared to the Spyderco PM2 that arrived along with it, but overall it came from the factory in very nice shape. I may pick up another one while the getting is good. This is a very economical way to test out the M390 if you haven't had a chance to yet. Pick one of these beauties up while you still can...

Oh, and I didnt even ask for it but I got the free sharpener. GPKnives is awesome!

Ok I received my M390 limited addition Mini from GP and had to send it back for it was blemished. On the side with the limited addition number there were 2 vertical lines going from top to bottom of the blade. You could also feel that each line wasnt just a mark but a very slight groove in the blade. This blade was nowhere near as nice of a blade as those who have post pictures. I wish I would have posted a picture of it. It was number #38.

So I contacted GP and told them about it, they told me to send it back in and they would swap it out. I was happy until I was informed (After I sent it back) that I would get digged again for shipping to me...not to mention that I already paid shipping back to them. A total of 24 bucks in shipping for a 89 dollar knife. When I contact them about eating these shipping fee in a round about way...they told me to f'off and if I want they can credit me back. But this gets better...I live in the state where the knife is sold. So I get taxed for it...wouldnt you thing that I would get credited the tax back... unbelievable. I will be letting benchmade know how their product is being handle by one of there vendors...never again! I cant even tell you how pissed off I am...and it is so stupid yet completely unacceptable and bad business.

Will they be making an M2 Mini ritter again...after my sour experience with GP Knives I still like the Mini-Grip but would never drop a dime there again. Too bad for I had heard such great things about M390...although my S30V limited addition from KW had a much better edge and a much better point/tip. The quality was night and day! So tell me about the M2 Mini-Ritter Grip? Is M2 the steel?

M2 is the steel; unfortunately Benchmade's last M2 blade came off the line as a Ritter Griptilian (RSK or Mini) and BM no longer uses M2. Good steel though, I like mine.

That is a bummer man. I've never heard of something like that from them, it really is a first.:(

I was shocked this is such bad business it isnt even funny. I spoke with Bill and he was great. But the email with the additional shipping came after. I am not certain who that is over there. Their emails dont say who the person is. But they need to go! I will take my business to KW, Rockynational, and new graham. All of which I have dealt with and continue to. I hate to bash anyone but after this they have it coming. Buyer Beware...if everything goes well initially I guess you are set but if you need them to do anything for you above and beyond a sale let alone support their stock items you are in for a treat!

Never. You'll have to find one in the pre-owned market.

Sorry we weren't able to do more for you. Unfortunately we can't always cover the shipping costs ourselves either, especially on aesthetic defects on knives. We do everything we can to inspect knives before they leave the store and make sure they are 100% functional, and offer a comments section before checkout for our customers to fill out if they have any specific requests.

We do everything in our power to make sure things are right the first time, as returns are a hassle for everyone. To be honest this sort of problem happens a lot, someone orders a Buck 110 and wants to return it because the blade grinds are a hair off, maybe a microscopic scratch is on the backspring, machine marks, etc. Its a rock and a hard place for us as a business, we inspect things as thoroughly as possible, however we often have to make a judgement call as to whether the knife is up to typical standards for a manufacturer. A lot of the Benchmade knives we're seeing come through these days have some machine marks on the blades, its part of being a factory made knife. Community input is welcome, please post here, I can start a new thread, or send me an email directly at justin@gpknives.com for your 2 cents. We may end up splitting shipping in the future as that is what I'm reading from several other companies.

Soapbox, if you're still interested in the knife I'll send you a personally inspected model at my cost + shipping, plus free shipping on your next Benchmade order. Just let me know what you want me to look over on this knife or subsequent orders and we'll make it happen. We value our customers and work hard to make sure everyone is happy. My name is Justin, I'm actually "out" on vacation this week but I'll be in next Tuesday. In the meantime if you give the store a call someone there would be more than happy to help you out. I'll make them all aware of this post.
