Benchmade 710 D2

Got a BM 710, and this is my first Axis lock, also got the BM/HK 14205 a week later, the 710 is a great knife, using as my EDC

I EDC'd a 154cm 710 from January 2006 until I got my Paramilitary in September 2009. It's an absolutely wonderful knife, I just wanted something a little smaller. But if my Paramilitary ever needed to go in for some warranty work, I'd put the 710 back in my pocket without a second thought.

Flatlander,

From one 'Buckie' to another, be forewarned. My 710 D2 came with evil intents... it soon replaced my Buck 110 pocket carry 'big knife'. Nope - neither is for detail carving - but both are great utility pocket knives - and great woods hiking company. The D2 isn't a stainless steel, so some care needs to be observed. Sadly, the 710 gets even more pocket carry. Also, it is responsible for the purchase of my latest - a 672 Apparition with assisted opening - it has the same scales, D2 steel, but no AXIS lock... I was soon back to carrying the 710 D2 - great combination - hard to beat.

LOL Stainz. I hear you! I've been on a Spyderco kick lately for my EDC preferences. Buck is still my first love however. My new charcoal stockman has won out for pocket carry and I'm expecting the BM to bump the Spydies for clip carry (at least at first). But, my big folding Bucks like the 110, Alpha, and Kalinga still rule for belt carry.

You can't get a super fine edge on d2 no matter what you use. It does take a toothy edge and hold it for a LONG time however. It is one of my all time favorite steels.

D2 me too! Tactical and traditional slipjoints, D2 is great. I have never used the sharpmaker or rods for sharpening. I am getting great success with the DMT coarse diamond stone slab, the brown and white profile set from Spyderco, about the width of a popsicle stick but still bench stones, with rounded sides for serrations if need be, and then the ultra fine Spyderco white stone. I cut a 4x4 into a 12 degree ramp, the stones lay on the ramp and hold my knife horizontal as I sharpen. It is a similar concept to sharpmaker in that you hold the knife vertical, where I hold mine horizontal. It takes some practice, and raising the handle around the curves, but the coarse DMT will cut into D2 no problem. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, (stay on topic CJ!:o) now I want a 710 as well. Thanks guys, I hate you now!:D

My 710D2 got here today. WOW, what a knife! No wonder its a classic!
You can use gravity and the axis lock to open this guy lightning fast!!!
Someone said no knife collection is complete without a BM710...he just might be right!

Congrats Flatlander!

Mine is coming tomorrow. I can not wait! The last time I was this worked up waiting for the delivery was with my ZT0300. And to add to the excitement, a Spyderco Endura G10 and Vic Alox Farmer is in the package too. Ugh, can't those boys in brown get here faster!!! :grumpy:

i have the 710 in D2. Great knife, I carry it often. Love the recurved blade, the steel, and the lock. Two things: it can be a PITA to clean. Also, I live in a very humid environment and I have had occasional encounters with rust. It requires a bit more in the way of maintenance than some other knives but it's negligible and well worth it.

I'm with you on that one. I don't see my Paramilitary going anywhere anytime soon, but my first knife love will always be Buck. And since we're talking about Bucks and Benchmades...

In my opinion, two modern classics.

The 710 is by far the best folder i've ever owned. The ergos, which vary from person to person, are perfect for me. I have medium sized hands and it feels perfect to me. I personally like that the g10 isn't as grippy as say my emersons. I love the lock, the blade shape, and material. I have not abused any folder as bad as I have one of my d2 710s and it took/takes it just fine. The only reason I don't carry it so much anymore is because I've gotten very partial to the wave feature.

I can not say enough good things about the 710. Its the only knife I have multiples of in case I eventually manage to break or lose mine, I can still replace it if they ever pull it from production.

You owe it to yourself to at least try one out.

To be completely unbiased, the is a few negatives I had with my 710s. 1 They were not as sharp as I like out of the box. 2 I didn't like the angle they were sharpened. 3 D2 holds an edge very well but if you ever let it get completely dull, it will take more effort to sharpen than your probably used to. D2 is HARD. None of these problems can't be fixed. I reprofiled my blades on my sharpmaker and have loved them ever since.

I had been brutal to my 710 and it took everything. It the one knife I will never part with.

I love mine too. I've carried it to work once or twice; generally I lean away from recurves, but the 710 has a certain charm. You won't find many people who dislike it.

My only qualms are that it is truly a PITA to clean, and (like most production folders) it will sooner or later begin to develop vertical and/or lateral blade play, especially if you use it hard. And I have :D

Great knife.

I love my 710. It's built like a freakin tank! In fact, one of the few hits I have against it is its weight. That and IMHO the G-10 is a little slippy. It's my only D2 blade but I've had it for over a year now with regular pocket carry in all sorts of weather with absolutely no corrosion. Stays sharp forever. I have also re-profiled to 30 deg. inclusive.

Just realized how old this original thread is. Brought back from the dead eh

I did :D

Someone on another thread said "this knife is a big knife that acts like a small knife." I couldn't agree more and that's exactly what I'm looking for in a clip carry knife. I'm looking forward to extended use and carry with this knife.

I'm really intrigued with it so far!

Now that's a Beautiful pair!! I love my Buck's but I fall into lust over some others too.

I have a thread on the Buck forum "I cheated with another again" since I'm a repeat offender in this lusting after other brands (BM's and Sypdies) thing:D

Just curious but why do you consider it hard to clean? All my knives get a little soap and hot water when they get dirty and they all clean up just fine. I then normally just wipe the water off and shake out any that I can and it does just fine. You can use compressed air or some WD40 if you don't have the air if you are worried about water sitting on the knife. Once dry finish up with your favorite lube and it is good to go.

I also wonder about your vertical blade play. The AXIS lock is designed to adjust for wear and should take out any vertical play that develops from use. Is the lockbar all the way forward on your 710 when the blade is open? If you send it in to Benchmade I am sure they will take care of you by either putting in a new stop pin and maybe some new springs that might have a little more strength to push the lockbar forward. None of my Benchmade knives have vertical play and my EDC Rift has been used pretty hard and is in my pocket everyday for probably going on 2 years now. Geez it actually might be 3? I will have to think about that but it has been used a lot.

I think the first thing I would do to a 710 if I got one is remove the recurve. I've always wanted one, but I never wanted to deal with the recurve.

I say get one and see how you like it. That blade has a way of growing on you. I was concerned at first with the recurve but I'm now finding it appealing to look at. Stropping is not as easy but what the hey.
