Benchmade 940 Broke TWICE!

I have 940 and it's flawles. If you want perfection than buy Sebenza ;).Cheers.

I'm extremely frustrated with benchmade. When I first got my 940 (Aluminum Handle) it came with an uneaven grind on the edge and was un centered, mind you this is my second knife I've owned and is the most expensive I've ever spent on one. I sent it in and they put a new blade for me. I the. Got it back and the knife was still un centered! I'm usually not this anal on knifes but when I spent $90 on a spyderco endura 4 and have it for 2 years and still keeps its center and then spend 180 on a benchmade I expect good quality. I sent it in again and they fixed it this time. Great!

So fast forward 2 months later and I go to flick it and the spring on the knife broke. I was pissed to say the least! Again going back to the fact that my "Plastic" $90 endura is going strong after 2 years of abuse I expected better. So I sent it in for the third time and they actually paid for the shipping their which was pretty nice of them. I get it back and read the note and said "rebuilt replacement knife." It seemed to have fixed the problem until three months later I go to play with it after it being in my desk for about a week and we are back to square one. Sorry for the novel but I just wanted it to be detailed😬 Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've read about people breaking their springs but say it is a rare thing. Do me and springs just not mix?

Thanks if you made it this far!

The $75 Endura is hard to beat at twice the price. It is that good.

Sebenza is boring design. And also it's framelock without steel insert. Better to buy ZT for half of the price with much better international customer service.

Much hate for BM in this thread. I own two Benchmades and have not had any issues with them. Imo, BM could be considered lacking in the design department. No major complaints on BM here and there are many users that hold them in high esteem to include myself. If you like it buy it, otherwise move to another company. Great thing about competition and different tastes. Buy a fixed blade to reduce moving parts :p

Just got off the phone with benchmade. I told them the problems I've been having and asked for my name so she could see my history. She was shocked when see saw all the problems I've had haha. She told me that the first time the spring had broken hadn't actually broken, it was misplaced. She also went on and saying that exsesive flipping may or may not influence a spring failure. She asked to send the knife in and told me to write a note with the details of problems I've been having and too include that the spring and blade play is a big concern. I requested to get w shipping label as they did last time and she said that it was an exemption. Guess I'll have too send it off again..... Hopefully it's fixed for good!

Always better to call Antonio!! They'll hook you up.
Please follow up and let us know the outcome.

Couldn't agree more Steve!
Esav to the rescue! Really glad we didn't have to put up with him for very long!
[emoji106][emoji106][emoji106] for Esav!

...at least in that incarnation. Trolls and shills on the forums usually reappear in another guise. On the one hand it's a PIA, but on the other it's kinda fun watching them die over and over and over. Kinda like a zombie movie.

Zombie movie Steve???
Excellent analogy!!!
And I agree.......the zombie trolls are so much fun!!

What's boring to some is gorgeous simplicity of design to others. CRK avoids the need for steel inserts by heat-treating the ends of their lock-bars. I will remember that ZT has better international customer service should I become expatriated, though. ;)

I like both ZTs and CRKs and have several of each.

I've had a hit and miss history with Benchmade. Bought a couple Griptilians and a Sequel years ago and all were way off center and wouldn't straighten out.

The Sequel even went back to Benchmade and returned almost as off center as it started and missing a bunch of steel from a ham fisted sharpening attempt.

I went a long time without buying any more Benchmades after that until I picked up a second hand 940 a couple years back that was flawless and remained that way.

Since then I've gone through a couple more Griptilians of both sizes, a barrage, and most recently a second hand 940-2 and a 531bk. All have been totally flawless. I got rid of the full size grips and the barrage because I just didn't dig the size. Still have 2 mini grips, the 940-2 and the 531BK. None of them are going anywhere any time soon.

A few QC errors are bound to slip through heavy production. Give them a call and I bet they'll straighten it out. They've really turned their QC and customer service around in my experience.

Not a fan of Benchmade.....I did have a Griptillian that I carried for a year and abused the hell out of it and never had an issue. I felt it was a nice knife...just that I feel most of their lineup is a little pricy for what you get.

Hey y'all! Just though I'd give a little update on my knife. I got a call from benchmade Friday saying my knife had been fixed. They said they replaced both springs, lock bar and stop pin and a few other things. They also fixed blade play supposedly. I am a little worried at this point and this will also show you my bad luck. Got a notification from UPS saying my package was delayed due to a "train derailment" I've never had this happen to me with ups but I hope my package didn't get destroyed.

lol man, a series of unfortunate events.
Hope this time it's fixed for good.
I also got a package coming from their warranty department today for my new 710. It looked like the edge were ground by a 4 year old.

Thanks for the update. When BM's price is discussed, the warranty service is cited as a factor that compensates for that cost. After all your issues would you say that you feel like that service has paid for, or justified that price, or has the sunken cost of your time and effort, shipping off the knife, waiting for updates and packages eaten away at that value?

Over the years I've purchased seven Benchmade products. Five of them I still have. Only one was not an Axis Lock. I have never had a Omega spring break. Ever. Never have needed to ship a knife to them for warranty service.

My 531 is off center just enough to say it is not perfect. Not a problem, really. If I wanted to nit pick, I could complain about the fact that the edges of my 531 and 162 Bushcrafter were not perfect. Overall they have been a decent company to deal with.

I am finding that I love the Axis Lock but dislike most of Benchade's knife designs.

I've only read a couple of posts, but anyone saying "if you want quality or perfection, spend THIS much on THIS" that's ludicrous. There are plenty of brands that have solid knives that are perfectly centered with only a small percentage having issues. Benchmade isn't one of those brands, unfortunately. They pride themselves on customer service and the AXIS lock, not quality control (COUNTLESS threads on this). I'm sorry the OP had this happen, but this is part of the reason I only own 1 Benchmade, and will probably be down to 0 very shortly, paying a premium without a premium product. To each their own I suppose.

agreed

So I got my benchmade back yesterday. I am pleased! Haha. The note that came a long with it said the omega springs were in fact the problem. They ended up replacing both springs and well as the stop pin and whole axis lock assembly. They cleaned, piled and replaced the clip and even centered the knife! I can't wait to use it again and let it get worn in.

Great news Antonio!!! Now go cut lots of stuff brother!!
