Benchmade 940 vs Griptilian which one do I buy

You should give the exchange here a look, you can save some money on initial purchase and if you get your knife and decided you don't like it, you can turn around and sell it and recoup most if not all your money.
I will look into it and see what I can find thank you

Griptillian hands down. Standard steel is fine. I actually like the half serrations if I am cutting lots of cord and stuff as the cord catches the serations like a rescue knife. They are more work to sharpen.

Guys, guys, guys and gals . . .
You've FAILED to provide the OP with the obvious, I dare say inevitable answer :
Get Both.
You will eventually.

Agree with this 100%.
Pick up the Grip now. Then, if you find that you really like the Axis Lock, pick up the other knife in about 6 months. Six months of useing a Griptilian will surely let you know if the Axis lock is a good match for your lifestyle and knife needs. Having both knives gives you a work knife and a dress knife that many people carry as their EDC.

Which model of Griptilian are you considering?

940. Just as tough as the Grip but without the plasticity feel of the basic Grip scales.
The bad thing about the Aluminum scales is that if they are dropped on rocks, concrete or black top, they can get burrs that would be sharp enough to cut you.

That being said, they would be easy to knock down with another piece of steel, so long as you notice it before it bites you.

I had a 940-1501 and sold it later. Nothing wrong with it. Its just that I prefer the more hand filling feeling of the full size m390 ritter grip. Plus, 940 seems too slim, to me. So I vote for griptilian. Also, if you plan to use the knife, I see no need to buy custom scales, which could cost you another griptilian. The factory scales are quite durable and wear resistant.

Grip is a must have. The Noryl GTX models are the perfect Utility/EDC. The 940 is very nice but a Grip is classic BM.

I'm going to go against convention (in this thread at least) and say 940. Hands Down.

Some have referred to it as an office knife, but I don't feel that's the case in my experience.

Pros:
It's a very tough knife (for any reasonable cutting task, not pry tool)
The mechanism is just as strong as the Grip. (basically the same)
The blade is a stout reverse tanto (thick to the tip and strong) - It's a utility blade.
Size - It is a very size efficient handle so it carries really well in the pocket (lots of blade for not a lot of pocket room)
Weight - its light.

Cons:
The handle size can be a downside if you have really large hands, but i wear size Large and it fits very well.
The texture on the handle isn't super traction G10, but it's worked for me in it's application.

I found that when i bought a 940 several years ago, i quit carrying my Grip and Mini Grip - just sold the mini yesterday actually.

Buy the one that appeals to you when you handle them.... then buy the other one later.
There's no real wrong answer between these two.

Both the 940 and the Griptilian are awesome knives. You need to hold both in hand at the store to see which is your preference. I carry a Griptilian for work EDC. If the Bugout hadn’t come along I’d still be carrying a 940-2 for off work EDC. Since you’re new to knives and just learning, I’m thinking it would probably be better to start with the Griptilian.

they are both great, but also very different...
I have:
- a mini DR griptilian, M390 blade and custom micarta scales
-> great as a small urban EDC, nothing wrong with it, but it you do some food prep, sometime the thumb studs goes into the path
- a large DR griptilian, M390 blade and custom groove CF scales
-> I like the blade shape, it is a very utilitarian blade, and you can do way more than with the mini
- a 940-1
-> compared to the 2 others, it looks like either the best or the worst of both worlds depending if you are looking for an urban or outdoor EDC :).

I live in cities and I like the longer blade of the 940-1 and slim profile of the 940-1.

Thanks for the opinion I'm going towards the grip too

I live in a city too so I'll have to keep that in mind but it would be used for mostly outdoors
