Benchmade 943 - Is There a Better Benchmade EDC?

I own the 943 and the 940-1. I couldn't decide which blade I like better so I always have an iteration of both... The 940 platform is awesome.

I know, but i just absolutely hate that green handle.

You may warm up to it, you never know. It's a welcome change from the common black. The Anodized backspacer is a nice touch also. In use, in everyday life, it's not bad to look at lol.

And the 710 is the ultimate Benchmade in my eyes. It's the knife that started it all and is timeless.

I've had both a 943 & 940. Got rid of both.
I don't like aluminum, the partial liners are smaller than a mini grips liners (with a bigger blade even) .
It just doesn't add up to a very strong design 4 me.
I've got 5 710's now.
The full liners make for a bullet proof design.
I not a 94X hater, it's just not for me.
The 710....now that's my kind of EDC.

Oh ok, I thought you meant the 942 was a good medium between the 940 and 710. Get a 943; they are great knives. The trend right now is thick blades so people like the 940 reverse tanto better. The 943 blade is no slouch.

The 710 is a knife that will never leave me again. It is the best all around knife I have come accross. Big enough to do anything and carries quite nicely.

I've never thought about that with the liners in the 940 series but I do agree. The 940 is a really cool design and I love how long the handle is for such a light knife but it's just not worth the coin TO ME. To others it is and that's one of the reasons that its a best seller.

I am leaning towards the 710SBKD2, my one worry is that it is a tad bit too big for EDC. Thoughts?

I feel like the most ideal knife is the 940S-1, but it is so damn expensive. I have been trying to find it for below 200, but the best i found was 225. I just need to keep looking until i find a cheap one.

As for size it really depends on you. I don't have a 710 yet (710-1401 Knifeworks Exclusive on pre-order) but I do EDC knives the same size regularly. I generally prefer to carry a larger knife -- I carry the 810 quite often and it's just about the same blade length as the 710 but overall a bit of a bigger knife. Also, I'm usually never in an environment where pulling out a knife with a 4" blade might attract unwanted attention or make somebody uncomfortable. I know some people who work in office or other professional environments don't want to carry anything much larger than something the size of a 94X to be more discrete.

I'm not really a huge fan of D2 steel though for EDC. That's partly why I haven't gotten a 710 before I ordered 710-1401, which is M390. I don't necessarily need a tough tool steel in my EDC, I'd rather have something more corrosion resistant.

Just for the defense of 94X design, it is not a weak design. Take a look at this strength test.

It can withstand 698 in-lb of torque.

I personally prefer Osborne Tanto (Modified Reverse American Tanto) over 943 drop point. The blade is thicker until near the tip that assures thrust cut without concern to brake.

Yeah me too, but I just hate that green. I am trying to find the 940S-1 for cheaper, but the best i could do so far is 225. Still looking...

225 new? If so jump on it. They sell used for that.
