benchmade aileron....tire thread...

It's an interesting design. The blade shape seems very Ritter-esque. So it should be a fine EDC
However, I think the last thing we need is yet another tool advertised as a weapon. Has Les been watching Cold Steel vids on YouTube or something?
I realize that there is a market for it. Otherwise they wouldn't be marketing as such.Unfortunately (IMO) this just adds to the bad image that groups like Knife Rights are fighting against in court.
If it sells knives. Good for you Benchmade, but in the long run It seems like your shooting..... or should I say, stabbing yourself in the foot.

Are you asking about the knife itself?
Or what a bunch of yahoo's think of the knife, even though they have never even held one?

I've had mine for about a week now.
I like it.
The laser etched friction pads allow you to open the knife with one finger.
The opening index is, anywhere on the exposed blade you put your finger.
Just a flick of the finger, to overcome the detent, and inertia does the rest.
Doesn't really need the opening hole at all.
Very fun knife.
I like the handle and scales too.
It's in my rotation
whats bs?

the video posted kinda explained what I already thought. 2 handed opening deal. before video I thought maybe the tire tread pattern was for blade grip for shaving or fine cutting needs. grip on blade not handle. guess I was wrong on that concept.

to answer your question........about the knife and folks who have played with it or used it.

This is literally what I expect if I ask about a knife on this forum.

Your impassioned defense had me almost buying one just to give it a chance. The AXIS lock is still my favorite after all these years, so I figured why not? Had it in my cart, seriously, but then I forced myself to re-watch the video one more time. At about 3:12 in the video I cracked up and deleted it from my cart.

You can't truly appreciate how bizarrely awful this design is unless you've watched the video about the magical two handed opening technique you can use for self defense with it:

when someone said it was for 2 handed opening airline self defence i thought he was trolling me.

Yes advertising for this knife was bad.
Yes, Tarani had input on the knifes design as it relates to his specific methods of H2H combat.
I don’t care about those things.
I don’t care who designed it, nor do I care what they have designed it for.
I’m a user.
So, it’s all about the knife for me.
What I find most interesting about this model is that they could have made it with no opening hole at all.
No hole, no stud, no disk, just continue those tire tracks (laser etching) all the way up the blade.
The one finger flick is very fun.
I like the handle, though most people will probably dislike it. It has semi-aggressive jimping at both ends of the handle. The handle shape is such that it traps your fingers on to the handle. Fencing you in with its “U”-ish shape and the aggressive teeth. It provides a positive stop in both directions, forward and back
This handle may not be ones first choice for all day cutting chores.
I like the 2 standoff’s open design.
The blade is 1/8” thick almost all the way to the tip. Mine came razor sharp & centered, no blade play or lock stick.
Flick! :)

It looks like someone put their knife in a waffle iron!

You want a defense knife, don't get a folder.

Typically I believe that in order for a folder to be considered barely adequate for self defense it needs a wave or wavelike feature. Imho now that the wave exists to release an sd folding knife without one is borderline negligent.

Seeing it in those pictures, the knife is better than those factory benchmade ones, but like ive said in similar threads; 190.00 for s30v and g10 ? And theres plenty of other knives out there that are just as capable as this for less with better steel and handles....

Well I like it more in Keyman's pictures as well. I could care less about the CIA marketing ploy though. I was thinking if I actually were to get one, and didn't like the waffle grip on the sides of the blade some sand paper might take care of that.

I like the overall design of the knife. Dont know anything about the 2 handed opening method, but i think its interesting that Keyman Keyman likes it because it is easy to open one handed.
ETA: watched part of the video, seems like the guy would like an OTF

Stupidest knife advertising video EVER! If they were designing an easy opening self defence knife for a bunch of non knife carrying people than why isn't it an OTF, spring assisted, or (Waved). As for the two handed operation during a self defence situation is a complete joke. It's like your saying Hey! look at my knife between you and me, now shoot me or slap it out of my hand. Just another gimmicky ( TactiCool ) vanilla knife in a sea of blah knifes IMO. Like Doug Marcaida says ( A knife is meant to be felt and not seen ) That means that you keep it concealed till close contact happens if at all. You don't go pulling it out in front of you and then start opening it with two hands. That's a great way to get dead or at least a good swift kick in the jimmys. Can I say Jimmy's? I was told it's not PC anymore. I feel sad for Bench Made but every one makes a mistake now and then

The knife doesn't look bad. The handle shape and texturing looks kind of like a sunburst pattern Volli, and I can dig that. The blade is a nice wide shape and also looks decent. It doesn't look like a bad knife at all.

The marketing and videos, however, are a completely different story. The two handed opening technique is just extremely stupid, an indexing groove would be vastly more effective to use that tactic. A little bit of laser etching improves traction while dry, but if slightly wet, or you don't get a strong grip that's a great method to slice your palm open. The axis lock can be worked by simply flicking your wrist holding the knife, no stupid or dangerous extra step required.

I do like the handle/grip design. it does look like an overall nice knife.

but what makes it designed for pilots? not really getting that. also if this knife is intended for SD why does the blade have so much belly and an overall design that eliminates good stabbing capabilities and limit you to just slashing and even at that it wouldn't be fully effective with all that belly .? wouldn't a warncliffe design be better like you see on the Spyderco Yojimbo? this blade is more of a general cutting utility design similar to a Griptilian.

overall I like the knife and am glad to see its well liked by owners. Its just the ad that makes one shake their head.

Even cold steel thinks the marketing on this knife is ridiculous.

I hadn't really thought about the blade texturing in a positive way until Keyman mentioned it. I too would like to see no opening hole and the texturing extended. It would be an innovative opening method in a market full of knives that don't show innovation at all. Price for the materials is also a concern but I think that is happening with most USA made knives.
