I am going back and forth on deciding which of these two tactical folders to get but I would like some help from the blade experts. This is not about self defense or knife fighting I just want to know which is the better product in your opinions.

vs

Some concerns that I have are the following.. The hogue has the same size of blade as the bedlam except it is thicker and is made of the same steel so maybe it is has a more durable blade..It is also lighter( good thing) than the bedlam by almost 2 ounces in either g10 or aluminum,drop-point or tanto ..The bedlam has a larger, more capable handle with a steel pommel that can also serve in other uses. The bedlam also has a safer handle because it would do a better job of stopping your hand from moving forward. One has the axis lock and the other the button lock and I have no experience with either of them. I can get the bedlam for 30-40$ less.Basically I just want to know from people who have experience with one of them or both would be preferable .

I'm huge BM fan, but in this case I think I'd go with Hogue. On one condition - change blade to drop point, which is an option. Blade shapes on both knives pictured are not very practical IMO.

Yes the tanto was just an example, I'm not sure which blade shape I would go with if I get the hogue.

I don't usually like tantos, but the one on the ex01 looks hot. the drop point on it looks strange to me. between the two I'd choose the hogue in either blade.

The whole thing with me is just that the Hogue packs all the same blade "fire power" if you will that the bedlam does and it's 2 ounces lighter. The blade is also thicker and more durable. I am just not sure if that is enough to take the win over the bedlam.

the safety on my hogue is very easy to engage disengage, so much so that it has prevented my from deploying the knife properly on several occasions, i do not carry it anymore. id leave the safety off and it would engage in my pocket, and when i would need to open it id be unable to. mine might have been a lemon, but its something to consider.

I don't know about the Hogue (except that it is extremely ugly imo) , but I use the 860 for couple of months , and it's for sure a solid knife

The grip is excellent from all positions and the opening is wicked fast

That being said - watch out for blade play , especially vertical

If you buy online , definitely ask the dealer to inspect it before shipping

Was the 860 you had satin or black coated?

Satin
Black coating suck the big one , especially with AXIS knives , as it make the lockup more stickier , at least at the beginning
Bedlam look much better (and way more intimidating - if you even care about it) in satin

since you are looking for something tactical, mabye look at the newly released spyderco massad ayoob. this is a pretty interesting self defense/tactical knife.

I actually saw it but I think it's a little smaller than I would like Imo I prefer 4" blades.

I have heard that the black coated ones have more blade play.

dont let that discourage you, the spyderco massad ayoob is almost legendary. it makes up for length with its awesome design, im sure the new g10 ones are excellent.

i have the older one and its definitely nicer than than both the hogue and the bedlam. much slimmer, smoother all around, lighter and easier to carry. the bedlam feels heavy and clumsy in comparison.

I think what you heard is a nonsense , it should have nothing to do with the coating
Blade play in AXIS locks is a problem of poor tolerances and\or bad fitting (a stop pin that is too small or axis bar that can not engage deeply enough into the tang of the blade)
My black coated 950 Rift is actually my only AXIS knife with absolutely zero blade play
The only problem with the coating is the stickiness
It usually takes a good 100-200 openings until it gets better and smoother

Was the blade play in your 860 something you could easily fix?

I had both. Traded the hogue, still have the bedlam. Bedlam fit my hand better, carried better and looked better.
