Hi folks, well, my Benchmade Bone Collector arrived today, the large model number
15020 plain edged with black G10 scales. As others have noted, it is a NICE knife, very solid feel.
Some may not like it's thicker handle style but it provides a pretty secure grip
with somewhat of a palm swell to the shape of the sales.

It has the Axis lock, which works very well, solid lockup and smooth opening.
Has a thumb hole verses a thumbstud, which I really like as it doesn't get in
the way of sharpening or snagging on a pants pocket.

Pretty good guard area shape, with a slight rise on the spine as well so it's
like a double guard. with some grip cut into the steel liners, of course the
scales are deeply grooved, perpendicular to the handle and provide a nice feeling grip.

The clip also works pretty good, with the grooves in the scales, it helps retention
without tearing up your pockets.

The blade, it's made of D2 steel, would have liked to have seen CPM-D2 from
the reports of that compared to regular D2 but, D2 is no slouch and while it arrived
with a decent edge, I had to take it to the Edge Pro to polished them up to my liking.
That was a bit tricky to keep the manufactured bevels, didn't want to lessen
the angles just yet, so I had to raise the stones a lot higher to maintain the same
angles, ended up very nice and SHARP polished edges, slices through leather
with ease now!

NOW, the bit about modification, the blade shape is pretty unique, love the high
flat grind they apply, but wasn't overly happy with the way the blade came to
the tip, yeah, I know, I can't leave well enough alone, in less than an hour if
it's arrival, out to the shop to work on the blade shape ;)

Now this is just my take on it, I'm sure there are MANY that LOVE how it arrives in the standard shape
but I like how this turned out and it seems to me to be a more useful point now.

This first image I borrowed from one of the other reviews, Be sure to view this as he adds a LOT of good info,
which you can see in this Thread here so thanks to marthinus, I should
have taken a Before shot, just in a hurry ;)

here's how the blade arrived initially

I then took the blade to my 9" flat disc grinder rig, home made deal, and proceeded
to bring that spine down to meet the point in a sleeker way;

Now when I go to do some fine cutting with the tip, my thumb on the spine
of the blade, I feel I have a bit better control, than when it was a wider
thicker tip originally.

Overall, this is a superb folder and highly recommend it, even in it's original blade shape ;)

After I reprofiled the blade I was slicing into some 1" by 4" wood and the thicker
handle provided a solid grip without any problems of it slipping or twisting in my hands.

Again, the change may not be for everyone, but, for me, it certainly made it a handier blade shape/point...

That turned out great. It looks like a much more useful blade shape.

Wow, that's nice work. I like the new profile you put on it. Looks much more useful.

Oh, nice! Subtle change, but looks a lot more slick now. It looks more like a presidio blade with thumbhole.

I think the points a little lower than the Presidio's are but it's close though, good eye!

Thanks guys, I also just did one other slight mod, to where the thumb slides down
to push open the blade, felt like they made that swoop using a ball end cutter,
so there is a pronounced curve upwards near the very edge, instead of being
a complete ramp down to the opening hole of the blade, so I too my dremel and
ground that ramp down where it should have been initially. On the opposite side
I didn't grind it as agressively, just softened the raised portion a little so it feels
better when gripped now.

I love the feel of the Mini Bone Collector. But I never liked the shape of the blade that much (or the logo). So I had the blade swapped with one from the Mini Presidio, and now it's just plain terrific.

Gary,
I love your profile mods. I still think of that one you did on a Stretch a while back. I've always been too afraid to try it on mine.

Thanks guys, in order to make those mods, you need to take it slow
and keep the blade cool, lots of dips in water.

Wow! That looks great. I sure would like to see a profile of the whole knife, and not just the blade.:thumbup:

Thanks, I'll get a shot of it later on this coming week, traveling this morning...

Here's a shot showing the grind down to the liner
will sand it down a little bit more when I get back home.
I think that the ramp would have been ok if there was a thumbstud,
but for use with a hole opening, it's really not quite right

and here's a few shots more of the knife itself, full size open shots;

and defying gravity a little bit ;)

Asking for additional pictures was the stupidest thing I could have done. Those just might eventually cost me some money. :)

Thanks, Gary! Both the pics and the knife look great!

Hehe, yes, it can do that to you!
The knife is pretty solid folder, I'm really liking it a lot !

The photos were just quickly shot here in the hotel room
with a desk lamp and a small flashlight, best I could do
under the circumstances...

You did a beautiful job. I like the "new" blade shape.
I usually can't resist doing mods on my knives as well.

That is a great job Gary! I sorta did something to mine that was a little different. I used my Dremel and a bucket of water:thumbup: and ground the area where the blade drops flat. Gives it that reverse tanto look that I really like. No pics, but just imagine the Griptillian that has the same blade profile.

thanks guys, using this since getting it and really like the overall knife.

Now the G10 is a little on the smooth side, I guess there wasn't anyways
around that, so it can feel a bit slippery at times, but it's a handful of knife!

And the blade cuts great! slices quickly, cut into some triple wall cardboard
with ease today :) gotta love a knife like that. the braided leather fob with
custom bead makes for a quick draw of the knife.

Here's a short video clip, also has my Kershaw San Mai Damascus Double Cross liner lock folder, pretty cool old/new school knife;

I don't know if it's the lighting or the mood music, but the knife looks even "more better" in the video than it does in the pictures! :)

Haha, well, figured it was better than me just yaking away, let the knife
do the talking, light from a desk lamp here the hotel room, music via my
ipod and small X-Mini speaker, plays pretty good for the room size.

I was surprised with youtube, got an email about the audio content, the
song was recognized and a link made to itunes and Amazon, that is kinda
spooky it identified it and also blocked the video in Germany, sorry to the
Germans :( didn't know it would do that!
