Benchmade Bone Collector...Modification

I love the blade shape the way it comes but I equally like the mod you did to yours. It looks like it came that way. It looks fantastic and maybe Benchmade will take note and offer both tip shapes someday.

Thanks and I can see why they'd want to release a model with a special blade shape
gotta have an angle as it were to grab the public's attention, but for me a pointier
point just works a bit better for me...:)

Gary, thanks for the thread and sharing this.
This is some good info about a great mod for a fantastic knife.

Thanks Teacher, been carrying it a while now, add a little more to the review;

The grooves in the handle provides adequate gripping but also tends to snag/hang up
when clipped in the pocket, but the smooth G10 doesn't seem to be tearing up the
edge of the pocket, so maybe that's really a plus for retention.

The FATNESS of the handle, does provide a secure grip, but again, a little more texture
in the G10 would also be welcome, might be hard to do while they contour it as they do.

Blade, well I'm still pleased with the mod on the tip, proves to work well getting the tip
into tight areas where the wider tip might have some trouble.

Steel, the D2 blade sharpens up well, but seems to lose it's inital razor edge soon, but as
some knife makers are want to say, D2 takes a bad edge but keeps it a long time, meaning
it in a good way ;) that while not razor sharp, it still performs and keeps on cutting.

The ramp to the thumb hole, I need to sand that down just a tad more, might tackle that
tonight, as it can be ground down to the liner and that should provide a smoother
transition from handle to the opening hole in the blade.

Lockup is still very solid, albeit I'm not battoning through tree trunks with it, but every day
chores it locks up securely.

All in all, quite pleased, I'd like to handle the smaller version some time, but that will be a while down the road.

A word of caution on sanding down the ramp to the thumb hole
don't get over zealous, I was sanding it down just a bit more when
an opening showed up in the side of the scale, seems that Benchmade
must have hollowed out the underside of the scale, for some reason
near the thumb hole slide portion :( so not I'm trying to fill in the
gap with super glue, of course it's pouring into the underside of the scale...
wish me luck :)

Here are a couple images of the oops...:(

Like to get another scale but I hear that the price of a scale is almost the price of the knife, :( oh well, I will get use to this...

I called Benchmade today, kinda funny, the nice lady asked how she might direct my call
I asked for Customer Service please, she hung up, :)
I called back, not one to be deterred  and said I'm sorry, we were
disconnected, I'd like Customer Service please, so I finally get through
to a fellow named Andy, he was polite enough but said they generally
don't send out scales for folks to put on themselves, need to send the
knife in and have to buy both scales, about $60, so figure that, plus my
shipping and their shipping, we're closing in on $80, I paid about a $100
for the knife, so that's kind a rough for two scales. He put me on hold
and tried to reach someone in repairs, but it was close to lunch so no response,
He sent me to a voice mail in repairs, Sheila I think her name was,
I left a message and my number, but I doubt I'll get a call back.
Too small a fish and hey, it is clearly my fault, but then I was trying to
sand down the thumb ramp to a smooth transfer, instead of a ski jump ;)

Oh well, other than that hiccup, I still love the knife a lot, great edc !
From the small bit of dust from sanding, the knife felt gritty, so I held
it under some hot running water and worked the blade open and closed
and now it has a very smooth opening, afraid to say but now I really don't need
to thumb it open, whereas before it didn't flick open unless you flicked hard
and I don't care to do that with my knives. But now, it flicks easily open and closed! :)

what ended up happening gary? did you get the scale problem worked out?

Nope, a friend took it off my hands as is, but it certainly was a lesson learned!!!

That must have been a freak void in the G10, Gary. The only hollowed area is right around the Axis mech and spring far to the right of the area you were re-profiling. It's (supposed to be) solid all the way to that edge that you were working. I've seen enough of them apart to know, being a BC nut, unless something's changed with their machining.

BarryH, G10 master Jedi, once told me that G10 can have voids that occur in its manufacturing process.

Very illuminating thread, Gary - thanks!

I have a Mini BC with the G10 sides sanded down. I like the thinner scales -- the original handles seemed a bit thick. The smoother handle now won't wear down your jeans pocket.
