I think Benchmade dropped the ball on naming the 535 Bugout.

This was the perfect knife to target the “physical athlete” market. For anyone who is a runner, cyclist etc.

I personally can’t let childhood dreams die and still play pickup basketball. I played 2 hrs the other day with the 535 clipped in my waistband completely unnoticeable by me or anyone i played with. The deep clip held the knife completely in place and the weight went literally unnoticeable.

For people who run early am or in city environments you can carry a knife without any hindrance.

Right down to the color which can be expanded in the future for people who can illude to certain allegiances or what have you.

I see what you’re saying, but “Bugout” makes a lot of sense, actually, since people concerned with having “bugout bags” often put a lot of consideration into the weight of the objects involved.

Also, consider how much crossover you’re likely to see between Benchmade’s consumer base and the following two categories:
1. People with bugout bags
2. People who do a lot of cardio but also need to peel an apple at a moment’s notice at any time during said cardio

Personally, I wouldn’t have a knife on me during anything that involved exercise clothing, consistently running into people, and/or a lot of jumping. There’s a lot that can go wrong there - clips gouging people or catching on things, the knife shifting to a position where it could partially open, damaging the knife (or yourself) by landing on it, etc.

I does seem to have a classic drop point "outdoors" design. "Outdoor recreation" is what Loveless designed his drop point for. Bugout seems appropriate.

As far a what a knife designed for use during pickup basketball knives would look like, I don't know. I don't know what I would use a knife for in that scenario.

Maybe a neck knife?

Welcome!
I think "Bugout" is pretty much the perfect name for it!

I think they named it that because it is probably catchy to the consumer base. “Letterman” doesn’t sound as cool to your average knife buyer. Feel free to call it the 535, though.

The example of basketball was referenced as an extremity Not necessarily so literally.

But in terms of being pushed in stores like REI or a Dicks type store to an audience that may not otherwise be interested in brand/model.

Knife people/outdoorsman dont need target marketing to pique their interests.

Im probably just an idiot but to a company reaching different demographics probably holds some waer

To be fair, people that are into knives have such a variation in demographics they will find a knife to suit there needs...a benchmade jogger would be weird

"Benchmade Jockstrap". Benchmade folks you can use that one...it's on me. :D

Seriously it seems something lighter and smaller would be a good choice for sports...one of their neck knives?

If we are going to literally if you need a knife to play sports on even an occasional basis you should probably be more concerned about moving rather than a brand name. So yes my entire premise is defunct

While, many here do carry while jogging and even going to the beach, I think the market for "outdoor recreation" is larger than "sports", particularly for a folder of that size and weight.

Me neither.

Also:

After having accidentally poked someone with the knife. Paramedics & cops: " Sir, what conceivable reason could you have, for having a knife clipped to your shorts whilst playing a friendly game of hoops!!??"

No doubt BM market researched and found an opening for a lightweight outdoorsy folder, designed and prototyped it, focus grouped it and the name...that's what any business does. "Bugout" was undoubtedly well thought out.

That said, I do wonder if there is a niche for a knife for the active sportsperson. Maybe some make has already mader something like that.

Anybody?
